- John H. WOODLING, farmer, Section 26, Town of Spring Grove,
one of the respected old
- pioneers, now living where he settled in 1845, was born May
27, 1809, near Germantown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, son
of Jacob WOODLING, who was also born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania,
and was four weeks old at the time of the Battle of Brandywine.
He died October 13, 1844, in Vigo County, Indiana. His wife,
the mother of John H., died August 11, 1859, at the residence
of her son.
- Jacob WOODLING had a family of ten children, seven of whom
settled in 1837 in Vigo County,
- Indiana. The names of the children were: Jacob, deceased;
John H.; Francis, now in Brodhead; Charles died in this town;
Eliza, wife of E. R. ALLEN, Esq.; Maria; Ann, deceased; Polly,
now living in Pennsylvania; Jacob, deceased; and Catharine, deceased.
- The subject of this sketch, John H. WOODLING, was married
January 28, 1841, in Vigo County,
- Indiana, to Nancy B. ROLAND, and came here bringing his mother
with him, arriving in Green County, Wisconsin, in 1845, where
he bought 200 acres of land. Eight children were born to John
H. and Nancy B. WOODLING: Delia Ann, born December 28, 1841,
wife of George H. SLOCUM; Mary Jane, born June 5, 1844, wife
of Cyrus A. HORTON; Almina, born October 15, 1849, died August
26, 1850; Chauncy S., born August 23, 1851, died October 29,
1852; John Lyman, born September 8, 1853, died January 15, 1855;
Eunice L., born January 4, 1857, wife of Levi E. FREEMAN; Emery
R., born September 16, 1859, lives at home, and was married to
Kate, daughter of Daniel BROBST, Emery R. and Kate WOODLING having
had one child, John H., born July 25, 1883; and Harriet E., born
December 6, 1862, died February 27, 1864. Mrs. WOODLING departed
this life March 1, 1881.
- Mr. WOODLING has always been an active, public-spirited citizen,
and has served his town on
- the Board of Supervisors for a number of terms. Politically
he has, since the organization of the party, always been a Republican.
He and his wife were members of the United Brethren Church until
that organization here became defunct. Mr. WOODLING is not now
a member of any church, but is a Christian gentlemen.
