- Thomas LUCHSINGER was born April 5, 1844, in Canton Glarus,
Switzerland, son of Christian
- LUCHSINGER, and came to New Glarus with his father in 1852.
He grew to manhood here, and making the best use of his limited
advantages, acquired a good education, which with a mind by nature
studious and a retentive memory have made him a well-informed
and useful citizen. In February 1864 he enlisted in Company H,
Thirty-fifth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, and served credibly
until the regiment was mustered out of service. He came home
an Orderly Sergeant.
- After the war, in 1868, he was married to Salome HOSELY,
daughter of Mathias HOSELY, one
- of the first colonists. Salome HOSELY was born about 1850
in Wisconsin. Both of her parents are living. After returning
from the army, Mr. LUCHSINGER learned the trade of wagon maker,
which he followed until 1882, when he moved to Dayton and bought
the store and stock of William GREEN. He continued in business
there until the spring of 1884, when he closed out his stock
and returned to New Glarus.
- Mr. and Mrs. LUCHSINGER have had five children. The first,
Margaret, died at the age of one
- year. The living are: Christian; Barbara; Margaret; and Salome.
Mr. LUCHSINGER is well and favorable known throughout Green County.
He has been the candidate of his party [Democratic] for the Legislature,
and also for important county offices. That party being the minority
party, he has received a flattering vote, but has never been
elected.
