Carl Fehlandt

Carl Fehlandt was born in Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany, February 25, 1825. He came to America in 1865, settling on a farm in Roxbury, Dane county, Wisconsin. In 1869 he removed to the adjoining township of Berry. Here he farmed successfully for twenty-three years, until, in 1892, he moved into the village of Mazomanie, to live in retirement. After a life of unusual vigor and health he succumbed to a lingering disease, and entered into rest on March 27, 1903, aged 78 years, one month, and two days.

The deceased was widely known, and enjoyed the respect and esteem of all who knew him. His integrity was unquestioned, and the same principles he sought to instil [sic] into his family. His townsmen repeatedly chose him to fill positions of trust and public service, all of which he discharged with scrupulous fidelity. His help and his counsel were sought by his neighbors in their perplexity and need, to all of which his response was as cheerful as his services were gratuitous. The deceased was until the last year of his life a member and supporter of the Lutheran church.

The burial service on Monday afternoon was held at the Congregational church, and was attended by a large gathering of relatives and friends. The services were conducted by the Rev. Dr. Crawford, pastor of the church, who preached a very appropriate and effective sermon from Gen. 5:18. Besides a widow, the deceased leaves seven children, Carl, editor and publisher at Port Washington, Wis.; William, who is farming in Berry; Mrs. Sophia Kirch, living in Mazomanie; Henry, with the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, Milwaukee; John, attorney at law at Madison; Mrs. Mary Voss, living in Berry; and August, pastor of the Congregational church at Lone Rock. All of the family, with many of the near relatives, were present at the burial service.

--The Mazomanie Sickle, Mazomanie, Wisconsin, Friday, July 19, 1901, Vol. XXVIII, No. 21.
