The deceased, Maria Niebuhr, was born in Hagenow, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany, June 11, 1831. She was married to Carl Fehlandt and came to America with her husband and six children in August, 1865. Settling on a farm, first in the township of Roxbury, later in the township of Berry, Dane county, Wisconsin. She lived here until twenty-three years ago, when, the family now grown up, she came with her husband to this village to spend the remainder of her life.
There were eight children in the family, of whom seven are living, as follows: Carl, of Port Washington, William, of Madison, Sophia (Mrs. Henry Kirch), of Mazomanie, Henry, of Milwaukee, John, of Madison, Mary (Mrs. Robert Voss), of Mazomanie, August, of Ripon-all in Wisconsin. Besides her children, the deceased is survived by a sister, Mrs. Otto Toepfer, of Madison, by twenty-nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. Her husband preceded her in death twelve years ago.
The long life of eighty-four years was a record of unceasing activity; never thinking of sparing herself, devoted to her family, loyal to her friends, interested in everything going on about her, faithful in every duty. She was a life-long member of the Lutheran church.
At an early hour on Saturday, June 12, 1915, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Kirch, after visiting with relatives and friends on her birthday, the day before, she entered quietly and without warning into rest.
The funeral was held on Monday afternoon, with services at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Kirch, conducted by Rev. Lambertus, pastor of the German Lutheran church. Among those present at the funeral, besides the children were: Mrs. Wm. Fehlandt and daughter, Miss Della, Mrs. J. C. Fehlandt, Otto Toepfer, Mrs. E. L. Roloff, Mr. and Mrs. Gustav Harloff, Mr. and Mrs. Hugo Welsch, Mrs. Minna Hoffmann, Mrs. Dr. Briggs, all of Madison; Master Carl Fehlandt, of Ripon; Mr. and Mrs. Carl Meyer, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Niebuhr, Mrs. Louisa Teckam and daughter, Miss Lavinia, Fritz Niebuhr, of Middleton.
