George William Hawley, son of William & Mary Ann Hawley, was born in the Town of Berry, February 18, 1869. His whole life was spent in the community and the village of Mazomanie.
In may, 1891, he was married to Lucy Cooper. To this union seven children were born, five girls and two boys, Mrs. Grace Gorst, Mrs. Irene Sullivan, Mrs. Coletta Lucey, Mrs, Olive Schultz, of Mazomanie, and Mrs. Edna Amacher, Arena. Raphael, an infant son, died September 6, 1901, and his wife died September 11, 1901 of diphtheria.
In 1912 he was married to Mrs. Katherine Royston. After living on the farm for about a year and a half he moved to Mazomanie where he made his home until his death. He worked for many years as a railroad carpenter and after retirement, helped wherever his aid was needed. After two years of poor health he passed away on July 24, 1947 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Irene Sullivan, where he was being cared for.
He leaved to mourn his death, his wife and five daughters; twenty-six grandchildren; many relatives and friends. Mr. Hawley was a kind and loving husband and father. He will be greatly missed by all.
His six grandsons were pallbearers, namely; Harold and Floyd Gorst, Harland Sullivan, Eugene Schultz, Donald and George Lucey. Funeral services were held Monday morning at St. Barnabas’ church in Mazomanie with Rev. Father Josef Cieciorka officiating. Mr. Hawley was a member of the Holy Name Society. Burial was in the family lot in St. Barnabas’ cemetery at Mazomanie.
He has fought a good fight.
He has finished his course.
He has kept his faith.
Henceforth shall be laid up for him the crown of righteousness.
Which the Lord the righteous judge shall give him.
