Henry Kirch

The death of Henry Kirch marks the passing of another pioneer resident of this locality, one who for 78 years has resided in or near Mazomanie-longer, perhaps, than anyone now living here.

Mr. Kirch was born in Prim, Rhine Province, Germany, October 8, 1845, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Joachim Evert, Saturday morning, July 29, 1933.

With his parents, Nicholas and Barbara Kirch, he came to the United States in 1855. The family located in the town of Roxbury where they resided for a number of years, later moving to Dover where Mr. Kirch started the Dover mill in about 1870.

He was united in marriage with Miss Sophia Fehlandt in 1875. Eight children were born to this union, five of whom survive their parents: Mrs. Eda Evert, Nicholas, Charles, Mrs. Mamie Dunlap and Louis. One son, Henry, died in early manhood, and two daughters, Rosa and Barbara, died in youth. Mrs. Kirch died in 1922.

Surviving Mr. Kirch are his five children, ten grandchildren, one brother, Antony, and many other relatives.

Mr. Kirch and family moved to this village in 1900, where he rebuilt the Mazomanie Mills, which he operated for a number of years before giving its management over to other hands.

During the nearly 88 years of his life Mr. Kirch has enjoyed good health except for an occasional illness which his sturdy constitution conquered. His health failed during the past few months, and an unfortunate fall down stairs last Thursday no doubt hastened the end.

Mazomanie and it [sic] citizens will miss Henry Kirch. He was one of our solid citizens. His honesty and integrity are unquestioned. He carried on his large business in a simple and unostentatious manner and was a friend to everyone. And more than by his many friends, he will be missed by his family.

The funeral was held Monday afternoon, with services at the home at one o'clock and at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church in this village at 1:30. Rev. David Rath preached the sermon, speaking words of commendation for the deceased and comfort for the bereaved family. A male quartet sang. The floral offerings by sorrowing friends were numerous and beautiful, and the attendance exceeded the capacity of the church. Interment was in the Mazomanie cemetery.

Among those present at the services Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Kirch and family. Hugo Welsch, Mrs. Albert Hessmann, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Welsch and family, Mrs. Stanley Briggs, Ed. Roloff, Mrs. Walter Karberg, Mrs. Ray Trusler, Mr. and Mrs. John Walter, Mrs. and Mrs. Albert Reich, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Greening, Mrs. Frank Ditz of Madison; Mr. and Mrs. Louis Kirch and family of Indianapolis, Ind.; Prof. and Mrs. A. F. Fehlandt of Ripon; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Fehlandt, Mrs. Geo. Sichling, John Sichling of Milwaukee; Dr. and Mrs. Louis Rowell of LaFayette, Ind.; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Salzmann, Mrs. Alice Lloyd, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Orht of Arena.

--The Mazomanie Sickle, Thursday, August 3, 1933.
