Sophia Fehlandt was born in Mecklenberg, Germany, November 17, 1854. She came to America with her parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Carl Fehlandt, in 1865, and settled on a farm in Roxbury, where she grew to womanhood. She was united in marrige [sic] to Henry Kirch in March, 1875, and lived on a farm in Dover until 1900, when the family moved to Mazomanie, and this village has since been her home. She died at three o’clock Thursday morning, September 28, 1922, after an illness of a few hours, aged sixty-seven years, ten months and eleven days, being stricken suddenly while apparently in her usual health.
Mrs. Kirch is survived by her husband and five children: Mrs. Joachim Evert, N. C. Kirch, Mrs. G. L. Dunlap, of Mazomanie, Charles Kirch, of Madison, and Louis Kirch, of Chicago. Three children preceded their mother in death. She is also survived by seven grandchildren; four brothers, Charles Fehlandt, of Port Wsahington [sic], Henry Fehlandt, of Milwaukee, August Fehlandt, of Ripon, William Fehlandt, of Madison; and one sister, Mrs. Robert Voss, of Marxville, besides other relatives and a large circle of friends.
In the death of Mrs. Kirch Mazomanie has lost a valuable citizen-one who enjoyed the respect and confidence of all who knew her. She was modest and unassuming, possessed a clear mental vision, and was capable of carrying out with credit any of life’s activities which she was called upon to perform. The children have lost a kind and affectionate mother, and the husband has lost a true and faithful helpmate. She will be sadly missed in the home and in the church, and the entire community joins in the sorrow of the bereaved family.
The funeral was held Saturday afternoon, with services at the German Lutheran church, the services being conducted by Rev. C. Bliese. The Eastern Star Chapter, of which Mrs. Kirch had been a member for many years, attended in a body, and the respect in which the deceased was held was shown in the very large attendance at the services, both at the church, and at the grave in the Mazomanie cemetery, where the interment was made.
Among those who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kirch, of Madison; Mr. and Mrs. Louis Kirch, of Chicago; Charles Fehlandt, of Port Washington; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Fehlandt, of Milwaukee; Prof. and Mrs. August Fehlandt, of Ripon; Mrs. J. C. Fehlandt, of Chicago; William Fehlandt, Mrs. Walter Karberg, Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Rolof, Dr. and Mrs. Stanley Briggs, Mr. and Mrs. August Harloff, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Tressler, of Madison; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Salzmann, of Arena.
