York Township

Extracted from the "History of Green County, Wisconsin" published by Union Publishing Company, Springfield, Ill. 1884; page 1144:

This is the northwest town of the county. The territory is identically the same as that of congressional township 4 north, range 6 east of the fourth principal meridian. It is bounded on the north by the town of Perry; Dane county on the east by the town of New Glarus; on the south by the town of Adam; and on the west by the town of Moscow, Iowa county, and town of Blanchard, Lafayette county.

John STEWART made the first settlement in the territory now known as York. in 1838. Other settlers to follow were: William C. GREEN, Amos CONKEY, Albert GREEN, Albro and William CROWEL, and Ezra WESCOTT.

The first death was that of Harriet, daughter of Philander and Hannah PEEBLES. She died 01 Jan 1843 at the age of two years seven months. The wife of John STEWART died 5 Sept 1844.

Religions were Methodist; Free-will Baptist; and Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran

Cemeteries: The York Prairie Cemetery was located on section 23 in 1846. Joanna, wife of Hon. William C. GREEN, was the first person buried there; she died 21 Oct 1846. Mrs. Molly PEEBLES, who lived to the age of ninety-one years, was buried in this ground 1853. Mrs. Lucy MILLER age 91 was buried there in 1867 and Elish GORHAM in his ninetieth year, was buried there in 1873.

On section 27 there was a private burying ground on the old John STEWART farm. Mrs. Adeline STEWART, wife of John was the first one buried having died 5 Sept 1844.

The Norwegian cemetery on their church grounds section 5, was established when the church was built. The first burial was that of Karine daughter of Thomas THOMPSON June 1861. There is an older Norwegian cemetery located on section 17. This was the first Norwegian burial place in the town.
