Monroe city

Extracted from the "History of Green County, Wisconsin" published by Union Publishing Company, Springfield, Ill. 1884; page 921:
The land upon which the city of Monroe has since been built, was entered from the United States government by Joseph PAYNE and Jarvis RATTAN.
Other settlers were Jacob LYBRAND, Judge Jacob ANDRICK, and James CAMPBELL.
On the 28th of October, 1836, the town of New Mexico was surveyed by Abner VanSANT, for Joseph PAYNE, Jacob BINNINGER and Owen C. SMITH. It was platted on section 2, township 11 north, range 7 and contained twenty blocks, one of which was left for a public square.
On the 24th of August, 1839, Jacob LYBRAND deed to the county a tract of land described as the north half of the west half of the southwest quarter of section 35, township 2 north, range 7 east.. This was to secure the location of the county seat at this place. After several other additions, it was incorporated in the spring of 1858.
Religions were: Methodist, United Brethren in Christ, German Catholic Church, Evangelical or German Lutheran, First Congregational Church, Universalistic Church, Seventh Day Adventists, Episcopal Church, and Christian or Disciple of Christ.
