HOTELS

No village can live without it's hostelry.  We have the Mauston House (photo), brick, with parlors, dining hall and chambers; furnished with all the most fastidious can desire.  It is one of the clean, well kept hotels that R. H. Davis, the proprietor, can well be proud of.  He has 27 bed rooms, and always spreads a table that even epicures can be and are well satisfied with.

The Mill House, is another first-class hotel, having a large business.  For cleanliness and all that tends to individual comfort, it has no competitor.  It is home.  Mr. and Mrs. Anderson, the proprietors, spare no pains to care for and attend to the wants of those who visit them.

We have other hotels, restaurants and eating houses that our space, not our will, forbids present mention of.

HARNESS MAKERS

I. L. Alsbacher  (photo) has been established in the harness making business here twenty-seven eyars, and during that time has turned out lots and lots of work.  He gives employment to four men.

Basford Brothers, though not so long in the business, have established a reputation for doing excellent work, and have acquired a good trade.  They give constant employment to three men.

THE MAUSTON PICKLE FACTORY

This immense institution is owned and conducted by Messrs. William Moore and George Moore, under the firm name of Wm. Moore & Son.  The factory consists of two large buildings filled with vats, capable of curing at one time twenty thougsand bushels of cucumbers.  There is also another large building used as a cooper shop, where several men are constantly employed making barrels.  In 1882, they factory consumed more than 18,000 bushels of cucumbers; this last season very few were purchased, the frost having disposed of the crop.

HORTICULTURAL

C. W. Potter, President of the Juneau Co. Agricultural Society, takes special interest in the raising of fruit.  He has on his place a bearing orchard of 700 apple and plum trees, and in favorable season has a large crop.  He has an extensive nursery, and the past year disposed of 5,000 apple tress; 3,000 ornamental trees; 5,000 grape vines, strawberry plants, &c.  He has a large quantity of trees suitable for the spring trade.

MUSICAL

The Mauston Cornet Band, under leadership of Prof. M. A. Rublee, maintains its position as one of the best bands in the State.  They have recently procured a new and tasty uniform and are deserving the rank they have attained.

Among the dealers in pianos and organs we may mention Ralph Bowes, I. G. Spaulding, O. F. Temple & Son, and C. Headstream.  Purchasers will find a good assortment and the goods will be sold at the lowest rates.

MILLINERS

Mrs. Patterson, at her rooms on State street, and Mrs. Van Wie, at her old stand are successful in catering to the wants of the ladies in hats and bonnets.  They keep in stock complete assortments of millinery goods, ribbons, &c., and can at short notice accommodate a lady with the latest style of head gear.  Many others, dress makers and seamstresses, wait on and skillfully fill every want the leaders of fashion call for.

WATCHMAKER

S. E. Dickinson, in Naughtin's block, has but recently commenced business.  He makes a fine exhibit of clocks, watches, silverware and jewelry, and is already commanding a good trade.  L. Schward has been in this place many years, and carries a good stock of jewelry, clocks and watches.  John Headstream has been a resident here more than twenty years. They are all skilled in their profession, and work entrusted to them will be carefully done.

WAGON SHOPS

Mauston has always had a good reputation for its home-made wagons.  Our principal manufacturesrs are Radell & Co., and A. D. Lane.  The works of the Radell Company are extensive, thoroughly equipped and furnished with the most approved machinery.  They can make three carriages per day; and all their work is first-class.

Mr. Lane does a large business and his work is well approved by the people of the county who proclaim him a sound, honest workman.
