cIVIL WAR TIMES INCIDenT
Times-Argus, New Lisbon, WI newspaper
dated 07 Apr 1915

The Times-Argus is in receipt of letters from T. S. CASEY, 938 E. 46 St., Chicago, who makes inquiry regarding the time when soldiers were stationed here after the murder of Mrs. Geo. SALTER by indians in 1863.  Some remark which he innocently made caused him to be very roughly treated by the soldiers, and was the reason of his leaving town.  He was a clerk in M. F. CARNEY's store, and the latter was the owner and publisher of the Argus.  We are not in possession of files of the paper so far back, but would be pleased to know if any of our readers have preserved any of them, containing information about the soldiers and the murder of Peter BELLINGER upon our streets.  Mr. Casey says one incident has always been in his mind.  He referred to a man who offered a barrel of whiskey for each democrat the soldiers could kill.  This man's name rankled in Mr. Casey's heart for years afterwards.  Regarding his rough treatment and elimination from New Lisbon Mr. Casey says that all who were not blinded by partisan emotions were well satisfied that he was not at blame in the remotest degree.  A curious thing happened.  One of the soldiers was posted at the door of McDava's hotel to catch Casey when he came from supper, but he also being an Irishman would not touch Casey and tried to protect him later.  Years afterward the two met in Eau Claire by accident and greet each other quite warmly.
