Edward CODY, postmaster, was born in New Lexington [probably Perry
County, but could be Knox or Preble County], Ohio, 04 March 1874.
He attended the graded schools, finishing his education in 1890.
In 1894 he took a commercial course in the Columbus Business College, Columbus
[Franklin County], Ohio. When sixteen years of age he was employed
by M. HOLDEN, then engaged in the Furniture and Undertaking business at
Corning [Perry County], Ohio. Mr. CODY was also employed in the wholesale
and retail market business conducted by Mr. HOLDEN. Here he worked
from 1890 to 1893, when he sold out. He then went to Ashland [Ashland
County, Wisconsin], where he took up employment as a locomotive fireman
on the Milwaukee, Lake Shore & Western Railway, which position he held
until 1894. Mr. CODY then returned to Columbus, Ohio, again entering
the employ of Mr. HOLDEN in his new grocery and meat market business at
that place. He held this position until 1901. While in Columbus
he was Election Clerk in Precinct B, 9th Ward. In 1901 he came to
Antigo [Langlade County], Wisconsin, bought out a shoe store and has since
been in that business.
On 31 March 1902 he [Edward CODY] married Nellie J. M. ANDERSON,
a grand daughter of Niels ANDERSON, Antigo's first merchant. In 1915
Edward CODY was instrumental in forming a corporation, known as the Cody
Shoe Company, of which he was then made President. Mr. CODY was elected
City Treasurer of Antigo in 1904, [p 327] serving one term. He is
a Vice President of the Antigo Loan & Investment Company; was Clerk
of the Modern Woodmen for several years; held offices in the Benevolent
Protective Order of Elks Lodge; went through the chairs of the Knights
of Columbus lodge, and is a fourth degree member of that order.
Mr. CODY was Chairman of the Democratic County Committee of Langlade
County for ten consecutive years; a Director and Treasurer of the Antigo
Commercial Club, and Vice President of the Antigo Militia Company during
the war. He was one of the active committee members who put over
all War Work in Langlade County. Edward CODY played an important
part in the organization of Company G, Antigo's military unit in the [First]
World War. He is now Chairman of the Langlade County Chapter of the
American Red Cross, which position he has held since its organization.
Edward CODY has been Postmaster of Antigo since 24 February 1915.
He was elected State Treasurer of the Wisconsin Postmasters' Association
on 01 September 1921. |
