The DUQUETTE family was one of the first to settle in Antigo [Langlade
County, Wisconsin]. Joseph Jule DUQUETTE, a prominent Antigo merchant
of this day, was born 13 July 1874 at Norton Mills [Essex County], Vermont,
the son of Joseph Jule and [p 276] Melvina DUQUETTE. When five years
old he moved with his parents to Freemont [Fremont, Waupaca County], Wisconsin.
He attended school at Freemont, leaving that place with his parents for
Menasha [Winnebago County, Wisconsin] when still a boy. A year later,
in 1882, the family moved to Antigo, then a little village with but few
settlers. The father secured employment at the J. H. WEED mill, which
had just begun operations, and young Joseph, Jr., the subject of this sketch,
attended the Gowan school (named after Charles GOWAN). Three years
later the family moved to Rolling Township [Langlade County, Wisconsin],
where they settled on a farm. The DUQUETTE family then moved to Ramsay
[Gogebic County], Michigan, from where two years later they went to Rhode
Island, and after six months of residence there they moved to the native
home, Norton Mills [Essex County], Vermont. They returned to the
middle west, again locating at Ramsay, Michigan, from where they moved
back to Antigo and have since lived here.
[If the family resided in Antigo in 1922, when the text was published,
then who is the "Melvina DUQUETTE" listed in the pre-1907 Wisconsin marriages
who married (Daniel DRISCOLL?) in Langlade County on 14 January 1899?
There is also a Selina DUQUETTE listed who married (Jas. BASSETT?) on 26
April 1904 in Langlade County. The similarity of their names ("Melvina"
and "Selina") and proximity of their marriage dates (1899 and 1904) suggest
they might have being twins and possibly siblings of the subject, Joseph
Jule DUQUETTE, who was married in Langlade County in 1900. Submitter
did not view microfilmed birth, death or marriage records for this family.]
Mr. [Joseph Jule] DUQUETTE [the subject of this sketch] was married
on 05 June 1900 [in Langlade County; this marriage listed in the pre-1907
index of Wisconsin marriages] to Miss Carrie ANDERSON, to which union six
children were born, five of whom are living: (1) Aloysius,
(2) Gladys [who could be the "Glades M. DUQUETTE" born 23 October
1904 in Langlade County, listed in the pre-1907 index of Wisconsin births],
(3) Everen, (4) Gean, and (5) Robert.
[The deceased child may be "Delphrinan DUQUETTE," born 20 Apr 1901
in Langlade County; or --- DUQUETTE, born 21 Jun 1902 in Langlade County,
both listed in the pre-1907 index of Wisconsin births. Joseph Jule
and Carrie (ANDERSON) DUQUETTE's wedding date rules out the pre-1907 birth
index entry for "Edward E. DUQUETTE, born in Langlade County on 16 July
1884, as the deceased child, if the date given is correct.]
Joseph Jule DUQUETTE was for eighteen years in the retail liquor
business in Antigo, sixteen years an associate of Charles TUMA and two
years alone in the soft drink business, which he sold in 1921. He
purchased the N. D. NEILSON grocery on 26 March 1921, at 100 Superior Street,
took possession on 02 April 1921, and has since been successfully conducting
that business. He has made extensive improvements in his business,
which has resulted in an increase of his partronage. Mr. DUQUETTE
is a member of the Eagles and the Catholic Order of Foresters of Antigo. |
