Charles S. LEYKOM, deceased, a pioneer business man of Antigo [Langlade
County, Wisconsin], was born 14 November 1857 at Manitowoc [Manitowoc County,
Wisconsin], son of John and Ann LEYKOM. After attending the public
schools of Manitowoc, Mr. [Charles S.] LEYKOM took a position with the
Rand & Romer Hardware Company. In 1881 he came to Antigo, being
one of the pioneer merchants of the city. He walked from Eland Junction
[Shawano County, Wisconsin] to get here [Antigo, Langlade County, Wisconsin],
as the railroad was not completed this far north then. He established
a hardware store with John HESSEL, for a time was associated with H. A.
KOHL, and then resumed his partnership with Mr. HESSEL. He [Charles
S. LEYKOM] was a member of the Beavers Reserve Fund Fraternity and the
E. F. U. [Equitable Fraternal Union], an officer of the city [Antigo] frequently,
held the office of City Sealer of Weights & Measures for years, and
served with credit on the Board of Education. Mr. [Charles S.] LEYKOM
was one of the founders of the Antigo Public Library. The Library
Board sent condolences to his family at the time of his death, 26 September
1924. His remains were buried in the City Cemetery [Antigo, Langlade
County, Wisconsin]. In 1883 Charles S. LEYKOM was marrried to Nellie
WILLIAMS, an early Antigo teacher. He is survived by his wife and
three children, Sumner LEYKOM, Mrs. Charles THOMAS, and John Wallace LEYKOM.
His name is cut deep among the worthy pioneers of Antigo. |
