Among the citizens of Langlade County [Wisconsin] who have been the
architects of their own career and who have builded wisely and well, none
stands higher in esteem than William H. WOLPERT, prominent clothing merchant
and leader in city affairs. Mr. [William H.] WOLPERT was born 24
May 1879. When a boy of ten years he came to Antigo [Antigo Township,
Langlade County, Wisconsin], the county seat of Langlade County in 1889,
but four years after that little community had been incorporated as a city.
Here he attended the public schools and in 1892 he left Antigo to enter
the Metropolitan Business College of Chicago [Cook County], Illinois.
He returned to Antigo in December 1895, and the following year became an
associate of M. KROM, in the conduct of a department store, one of Antigo's
first. This co partnership lasted until 14 December 1910, after which
Mr. WOLPERT engaged in the retail [p 272] clothing business in Antigo alone,
commencing 15 June 1911. The William H. Wolpert & Brother clothing
firm has since, through the practice of honorable dealing, gained an enviable
reputation and the confidence of the people of Langlade County.
When the World War broke out the conservation of those necessary
articles of commerce vital to the winning of the conflict became imperative.
Accordingly the President of the National Retail Clothiers of the United
States appointed a board of twelve men, representative of the entire clothing
industry of the nation, to devise ways and methods of regulating the style
for civilian dress to the end that millions of yards of woolen cloth be
saved to the ultimate benefit of the fighting forces of the country.
Wisconsin and more particularly Langlade County was signally honored by
having as a member of that distinguished body none other than William H.
WOLPERT. The board acted in conjunction with the clothing manufacturers
and the Commercial Economy Board of Washington, D. C., selected by President
Woodrow WILSON, and it performed a distinct national service in time of
stress.
In July 1922, Mr. WOLPERT was selected by the Governor of Wisconsin,
John J. BLAINE, to represent the Badger [Wisconsin] people at the Brazilian
centennial to be held at Rio de Janeiro. It opened in September 1922,
and lasts until March 1923.
Mr. [William H.] WOLPERT was united in marriage on 21 October 1909
to Gertrude Fay BUTTERFIELD, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. BUTTERFIELD,
prominent Antigo citizens. Four children were born to this union
[of William H. and Gertrude Fay (BUTTERFIELD) WOLPERT]: Eleanore
Jane, Eugene Bradley, William Butterfield WOLPERT, and Ellen, deceased.
The WOLPERT residence is at 724 Clermont Street [Antigo, Langlade County,
Wisconsin]. |
