ABOUT THE INDEX
This database contains thousands of news items indexed from the Sparta Herald (SH) and Monroe County Democrat (MCD) newspapers. Both newspapers cover the Sparta, WI area in Monroe County. We began this project by indexing birth, death, and marriage notices only, but now include other news items about individuals, families, businesses, disasters, etc. The majority of entries date from 1867-1909, but indexing this newspaper is an ongoing project. Therefore, this database will be updated quarterly, so be sure to revisit this page. To use the database, scroll down the list to find the surname alphabetically. Then, locate the first name. Please be patient if you notice any obvious typos. We are aware of them and cleaning them up regularly.

ARTICLE COPY SERVICE
The Monroe County Local History Room will provide copies of articles indexed in the database for a nominal fee ($2.00 per article.) Be aware that actual content of the news items indexed in this database range from half-page obituaries to one sentence death notices. If you would like to obtain a copy of any of the news items referenced to in the index, you must send your request via snail mail along with prepayment and full article citation.

NOTE: We will not send copies of articles requested over email, requests lacking prepayment, or requests lacking full article citation.
