State of Wisconsin School for Dependant Children
Sparta, Monroe Co, Wisconsin

This PICTURE was submitted by Kathleen M. Thomas of her grandmother and her siblings who were wards of the "State of Wisconsin School for Dependant Children" at Sparta.

They were admitted to the School on April 26, 1905. The picture was taken while they were at the school. Pictured are: Cecil "Ray" Cannon, age 13 yrs. 11 mo., Eva, age 10 1/2, Stillman, age 8, and Adaline, 4.

At the time they were admitted, the family had been living in poverty in Dupont, Waupaca Co. Their father, Israel J. Cannon was a veteran of the Civil War, who due to several health problems was unable to support the family, and was in-and-out of the Veteran's Homes at Milwaukee and King, Wisc. for the rest of his life. Their mother was unable to cope, and deserted the family. The children also had two older siblings, Amelia, age 18 and Benjamin, age 17, who were left to fend for themselves.

All four siblings were indentured to families in different areas of Wisconsin. "Ray" and Eva in Waukesha Co., Stillman in Marquette & Waushara Counties, and Adaline in Marquette Co. They all left their indentured families when they reached the approximate age of 18 years.

At age 21 they were eligible to receive payment of the $50 fee the families they were indentured to had paid the School at the time the children came to live with them. The $50 was kept in an account in the child's name and paid out with any interest accrued. Eva, received payment for $54.36 for the eight years she was with her indentured family.
