State of Wisconsin School for Dependant Children
Sparta, Monroe Co, Wisconsin

Looking for any information on my Grandmother and Great Uncle that were residents at the State School for Dependant children:

Lydia Isbell Sutliff (born Feb 2, 1887) and her brother Grover Cleveland Sutliff born Feb 20, 1889) entered the school around 1895. No one is sure of the reason why, as both parents were living. No one has ever found any records of the family actually being together as a unit.

The mother, Amanda (Cloutier) Sutliff was enumerated with her children at the home of her parents (Whitney and Laura Cloutier in St. Croix Co., WI) in the 1880 census; the father Samuel Merritt was with his mother helping with the farm as his father had died within the year. In 1900 the father was in Hinckley, MN; occupation: wolf hunter, the mother was living with a married daughter in Western MN with a child, Ruby, born in 1890.

The mother, Amanda, continued to live in Western Minnesota with first her oldest daughter Laura Stotesberry, then with Ruby Dyer/Grey until her death in 1924.

The father, Samuel continued living in Eastern Minnesota (he was a liquer dealer in 1910, and a partner in farming in 1920) died in 1925 in Hinckley, MN.

Lydia Isbell and Grover Cleveland were adopted by John and Lena Schaller in 1902. Their names were changed to Lydia Adell, and Carl ?. They lived in Campbell, La Crosse Co., WI.

Lydia married William F. Bahnub in 1909, and lived in the West Salem area. Carl married Alvina Mashek in 1914, and lived in the Onalaska/La Crosse area.

Marlene was unsuccesful in getting orphanage records (in spit of court orders) as apparently those records were destroyed, so it is uncertain why they were sent to the School for Dependant Children. It always seemed so sad to Marlene that Lydia's sisters lived in Minnesota while she lived in La Crosse Co., Wisconsin and they never knew each other.

Marlene only found her biological family through a few clues her Grandmother Lydia passed onto to her; that she was born in Baldwin, WI, she had a sister Ruby, her mother was French Canadian (she was very proud of that) and Lydia's last name had been Sutliff. She didn't remember the first names of her parents.

This information has been been graciously provided by [Marlene Dopp] and for that we thank her. You can email her by clicking on her name.
