Nineteenth Regiment Re-Union
The Sparta Democrat, Friday June 27, 1890, Page 3
The annual re-union of the Nineteenth Regiment, Col. R. M. STRONG, of
Baraboo, commander, was held at Sparta, on Wednesday this week. The day was
distressingly hot, and as a consequence no parade or display was organized,
the boys using all their spare muscle in finding a shady place and fanning
themselves, while telling over their stories. Not so with the musicians,
however, they got into the shady places fast enough, but kept the music,
which was extra, going in a style that brought sweat like rain drops.
Headquarters were fixed at John W. Lynn Post hall, which was for the day
tendered to the visiting regiment. The members of the Post also tendered
the visitors the old camp-time custom of a division of rations and free
hospitality at their homes.
At 2 p.m. President BLYTON called to order. Letters of the regiment were
read from Capt. John A. CHANDLER, W. E. JONES, C. B. ALEXANDER, and G. A.
SHEPHERD, of Company C, the latter now of Oconomowoc, the others of St.
Paul; also A. L. WOODWORTH, Co. B, Norfolk, Virginia; John BARRETT, Co. K;
B. O. EMERSON, Co. D; and F. R. MORTON, San Francisco.
A vote was next taken on place of holding next re-union, showing 21 for
Sparta, 10 for Reedsburg, 5 scattering. It was then resolved to hold the
next meeting at Sparta in September 1891. A motion then prevailed
appointing W. H. BLYTON, president; and W. O. PIETZSCH, W. W. GORDON, Wm.
DAVIS, Wm. GAMBLE, R. MOFFAT, C. SHUNE, A. D. GIBSON, C. D. ALEXANDER, and
A. ROGERS, vice-presidents. One from each company in their order. A
resolution was carried, instructing the vice-presidents to collect all
possible data of the present residence of living comrades of their
respective companies, and report the names at the next annual meeting. Col.
R. M. STRONG then offered a resolution thanking President BLYTON, John W.
Lynn Post, the W. R. C. and citizens of Sparta generally, which was
unanimously adopted.
The meeting then adjourned to the shade of Court house park. Quite a
tournament, with fife and drum, helped the boys in telling yarns.
The resident members of the Nineteenth present, were Comrades W. H. BLYTON,
Joe POTTER, Wm. KERRIGAN, G. H. and Wm. SHEPHERD, and Peter ALLENDORF. The
register showed the following comrades present:
