Welcome to the
Oconto County Genealogical Society
We are a non-profit organization founded in 1997 for the purpose of promoting, aiding and encouraging genealogical research.
Our major goal is to help our members in researching their ancestors. We also offer those members outside the county our help in providing access and lookups to Oconto County records.
We recently completed a huge project where we transcribed all the Oconto County Cemeteries and made them available. We are happy to say that as of November, 2008, we have all Oconto County cemeteries available on a searchable CD. The Cd is available from OCGS for $5.00 for members and $25.00 for non-members.
We have established a Family History Room in
the new Suring Village Building. It is dedicated solely to ancestor research.
We have begun to collect family histories, papers and records for our new room.
We have have 6 Volumes of hard copy print-outs of all the cemetery
transcriptions and they will be available in the new room. Our next project is
to compile a record of all the county's schools and their staff. We have a
complete file cabinet dedicated solely to the history, pictures and stories of
these early schools. Several members have done extensive work on this endeavor.
O.C.G.S. meets on the third Monday of each month (except when notified in advance) at 7 pm, usually in the Suring Village Learning Center in Suring, Wisconsin. These regularly scheduled meetings are open to the public. Each meeting will feature a presentation and discussion on some aspect of genealogy.
Membership is open to all persons interested in genealogy. If you have roots, connections or just interests in Oconto County, your membership could prove rewarding. All members receive our quarterly newsletter,
The Scroll. Membership is for calendar year (January 1 - December 31). Anyone joining during the year will receive all four newsletters for that year. Members may also submit genealogy queries for insertion in the newsletter. The Society maintains a listing of SURNAMES being researched by current members. A complete list of the surnames being researched by members, can be located at Surnames. Newsletter articles, free of copyright restriction, are encouraged from the members. We have recorded all the newsletters from their beginning in 1998 through 2007 in PDF format and have them available if anyone wishes a back issue. A single hard copy back issue will be $3.00 each, or you can purchase the CD of our first ten years' newsletters for $25.00. The Adobe Reader may be downloaded (Free) from http://www.adobe.com . As a added bonus, we have included the names of approximately 3220 deceased veterans of Oconto County. This data was derived from our cemetery transcription project. Contact us if you wish to order a CD.
Annual membership in O.C.G.S. is $7.50 per household. If you would like a membership application form, click here. Our mailing address is:
