Henry and Elizabeth Glass resided
in Canton, St. Lawrence County, New York, their entire lives. Four out of five of their first children did not live past the age of 10 years, the exception being James.

James came to Peshtigo, Oconto County (Marinette County since 1879), Wisconsin from New York, in 1857. In 1858 he married Susan and by 1868 there were four children, Florabelle, Albert, Thomas and infant William. Susan died shortly after William was born in 1868.  James and the children continued living in Peshtigo and on Sunday night, October 8, 1871, the Peshtigo Fire awakened them in terror. In their flight for safety James, with Albert and Thomas were able to reach the mud flats along the Peshigo River before the flames overtook them. Florabelle, at age 12, with 3 year old William, did not make it to safety.

James resettled in Peshtigo after the fire with his two survivng young sons and remarried, going on to have 4 more children. Albert and Thomas also remain in Peshtigo as adults, married and raised families.
