Gilbert F. Olson, age 75, Gillett, passed away on Wednesday April 14, 2010. He was born in Maple Valley on June 26, 1934 to the late Stanley and Martha (Miller) Olson. Gilbert married Marge DuVon on Jan. 5, 1957. He was a heavy equipment operator at A.O. Smith in Milwaukee from 1952 to 1957, and then returned to help his family on the farm. In 1958 he worked for the Oconto County Highway Department, starting out as a Drag Line Operator. He held several positions, and became the Construction Foreman in June 1969, and ultimately became a Patrol Superintendent and Assistant Highway Commissioner in March 1982, which he held until his retirement in 1996. After retiring, he enjoyed helping local farmers, gardening, traveling, spending time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed meeting with the Alaska Crew for breakfast, meeting the guys for coffee each morning, and walking with Hawk School. Gilbert was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, and served on their Church Board.
Gilbert is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Marge of Gillett; his two sons, Albert (Amy) Olson of Gillett, and their children, Nichole and Andrew; his daughter, Cynthia (John) Ebeling of Oconto and their children Cassandra and Alex; his two brothers, Stanley (Suzy) Olson of Gillett, Clifford (Ellen) Olson of Fort Atkinson; his two sisters, Esther Velten of Green Bay and Eileen (Bill) Block of Coleman. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Gilbert was preceded in death by his two sisters, Leona Olson, Millie Petersen, and his brother, Richard Olson.
Visitation was held at Gruetzmacher Funeral Home in Suring on Friday April 16, 2010 from 4-8 p.m. Visitation continued at Trinity Lutheran Church on Saturday from 10 a.m until the funeral service at 11 a.m. with Pastor Shane Cota officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
