PETER CHRISTIAN                        01/07/1837  -  02/13/1911

Following information from “Oconto County Pioneers” article in the Oconto County Reporter and Hazel (Christian) Risto’s recollections.

Peter Christian was born January 7, 1837 in Denmark.  He emigrated from Hamburg, Germany to Canada where he rafted logs prior to entering the United States.

He emigrated to the United States from Canada in 1856 and lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin – secured employment doing chores on a farm during the 1st winter ($5.00/month).  Next spring he moved to Whitewater, Wisconsin and worked in a plow factory for a year and one half.  He then moved to Pensaukee, Oconto County, Wisconsin and worked for F. B. Gardner as a logger for 3 years.  Purchased 80 acres of timber-land from Louis Larsen.

He served in the Union Army during the Civil War as a private in “I” Company, Wisconsin 3rd Cavalry, from 11/18/1861 to 2/27/1865.  He supposedly had “trouble” with the “Quantrel” and the “James” Bands during the war (information passed down from his family) as he was stationed in the Southwest in Kansas (Forts Riley, Leavenworth and Scott) and Arkansas (Fort Smith).  He was one of the few survivors of the massacre at Baxter’s Springs, Missouri.  He was discharged at Madison, Wisconsin on February 27, 1865.

He then returned to Pensaukee (Abrams was known as West Pensaukee up until WWI) where he purchased another 40 acres ending up with a 120 acre farm

Oconto County Reporter (10/1895) – (written in the Milwaukee Journal)

It is all of forty years since Peter Christian of Abrams, accompanied by a young man companion, took passage upon a steamer from Hamburg for New York city.  They had heard of the opportunities afforded upon this side of the ocean for getting along in the world, and as their ambition would not be appeased with the quiet, uneventful life depicted about them, the bade adieu to their childhood home in Denmark and came to America.  Mr. Christian is still here – his companion remaining but one year.

Mr. Christian had no acquaintances in this country.  At Milwaukee, where he next turned up, he secured employment doing chores upon a farm during the first winter at 5.00 a month.  In the spring he obtained employment in a plow factory at Whitewater, where he remained a year and a half.  He next drifted to Pensaukee and for nearly three years worked for F.B. Gardner among the pines, during which time he bought 80 acres of timber land from Louis Larsen.  In ’61 he went out with the Third Wisconsin cavalry and served three years.  Returning to Pensaukee he cleared his land, latter added another forty and today he has 120-acre farm under excellent cultivation.  He married Miss Jane Bell at Pensaukee, whose parents now reside there; he had been treasurer of School District No. 4, for four years; voted for Lincoln for the presidency, and for the republican party ever since.  He did receive a pension of 10.00 per month, “but” said he, “when Cleveland went in they skirmish around to discover how to proceed to economize and began on me by knocking off 4.00 a month on my pension!”
