Nels Johnson was born in Denmark on February 6, 1860 , passing away in
1953, and came to this country on his 20th birthday, settling in the
town
of How, Oconto County. To begin with, he had nothing more than an axe
with
which to begin farming. He cleared a piece of land, and a year or so
later
aquired a team of oxen, and still later, horses.
All in all, Mr. Johnson farmed
and logged for more than 55 years in Oconto county, where he also
served
for many years as a director of the bank at Suring. His wife, Hansena
Golterman,
preceded him in death in 1946.
In the Johnson family were six
boys, Frank, Walter, Elmer, Jim, , and Archie. The
daughters
were, Ann, Mrs. Tamble; Hilda, Mrs. Ed Zingler ; and Hannah, Mrs.
William
Fonfarek . There were also 19 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren
at the time of Mr. Johnson's death.
