Moody Family

The Moody family has its roots deep in England. This history however, starts in New England and begins with Clement Moody and his wife Sarah Clark in the late 1600’s. Through time, the family would leave Kingston, New Hampshire and move to Gilmanton, New Hampshire, to Tunbridge, Vermont, Union Center, New York and eventually to McKean County, Pennsylvania. In 1868 Frank Moody and his wife Laura Kent with their children and Laura’s sister Mary Jane left McKean County, Pennsylvania and came to Oconto County to join up with another of Laura’s sister, Lucinda (Lucy) Tuttle and her husband Schuyler and their family. They settled at Brookside and opened a farm there.

4. DAVID4 MOODY (JOHN3, DAVID2, CLEMENT1) was born 04 May 1778 in Gilmanton, New Hampshire, and died 26 December 1843 in Union, Broome County, New York. He married GERMINA BEAN 18 December 1799 in Gilmanton, New Hampshire.

Notes
David and Germina moved there young family from Gilmanton, New Hampshire to Vermont and then to Union, Broome County, New York in 1812.

David and Germina are buried in Riverside (Bridge St.) Cemetery, Endwell (Union), Broome County, New York. The cemetery is located on Bridge St, off of Main St. in the Village of Endicott (Old Union). History marker at the front of the cemetery reads "Site of First Log Church built in 1791. Organized as Dutch Reformed and now Union Presbyterian at the corner of Main and Liberty."

Moody
William Moody, immigrant ancestor of this family, was born in Wales, England and came from Ipswich, Suffolk County, Wales and located in Newbury, Massachusetts. He was of Welch ancestry, and a saddler by trade, coming to New England in 1634. He was admitted as a freeman, May 6, 1635, and was one of the first settlers of the town of Newbury. His descendants have been among the most prominent men of that town and vicinity to the present time. He had a ninety-two grant from the town. According to tradition he was the first to shoe oxen. He died October 25, 1673. His widow, Sarah, died January 13, 1672-73. Children: Samuel, born in Wales, about 1630; Rev. Joshua, about 1632; Caleb. The Rev. Joshua was educated in Newbury, and was a graduate of Harvard College in 1653. He was a minister in the Congregational church at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in 1658. Because of his refusal to administer the sacrament to two strangers, to him unknown, he was thrown into prison by order of Governor Crawford, where he remained thirteen weeks, when through the influence of friends he was released, and went to the "old Church" in Boston, where he preached until 1692. He had a son Samuel, who was a graduate of Harvard, and a renowned preacher, who had five sons, three of whom were ministers.

I. David Moody was a descendant of William Moody, who immigrated from Wales, and is said to have been a son of Joshua Moody, a descendant of William, and born in Essex county, Massachusetts, May 4, 1778. He married Gemina Bean, and removed to New Hampshire, and from hence to Vermont, and from there to Union, Broome county, New York, in 1812. He purchased a farm on Bean Hill, and followed farming during his life. Children: 1. Nehemiah, born in Vermont, in 1800; married Nancy Rockwell, at Union, had a son Elisha, and several other children; removed to McKean county, Pennsylvania, with his family. 2. Stephen, born in Vermont, in 1801; settled in Cortland, New York; married Charlotte _____; had three sons: Burletie, Frank and Gideon. 3. Zebina, born 1804; removed to Michigan, and had several children. 4. Gemina, who married Josiah Callerty, and left three children: Charles M., Milton T., and Albertine. Charles M. had twin sons, Lute D. and Lee M. Cafferty. Albertine left no children and Milton T. left one daughter, Emma Cafferty. 5. Hannah 6. Sally 7. Abbie, each of whom were married, but left no descendants. 8. Charles, see forward. 9. John, born at Union, 1816; was an attorney and resided in New York; married (first) Elizabeth Steele, and had one daughter, Jennie, who married Frederick Goeller, and has several children. His first wife died 1870, and he married (second) Margaret Goeller, by whom he had two sons, John and Milo, who reside in New York.

II. Charles, son of David Moody, was born April 8, 1808, in Vermont, and he removed, in 1812, with his father to Union, New York. He received a grammer school education, and, for a number of years, was engaged in farming and lumbering at Union, New York, where he married, January 1, 1838, Amanda, daughter of George Keeler, who came from Connecticut, and Elizabeth (Smith) Keeler, who came from Dutchess county, New York, who had several other children. Charles Moody and his wife removed from Union, New York, to Spencer, New York, in 1862, where he engaged in farming, and resided until his death, in 1891. He was a long time member of the Methodist Episcopal church in the village of Union, causing the same to be built. Children: all born at Union, New York: 1. Edwin C., see forward. 2. Harriett A., married Marshall Sweetlove, and has no living children. 3. William H., born May 20, 1848; married Ella Sullivan, and they had three children: w. Dwight, born 1874, died June 1910; Fred C., born 1876, died 1888; Raymond, born 1885, an attorney at law, and resides in Brooklyn. 4. Charles E., born February 22, 1850; married Dean Hutchins, and resides at Sayer, Pennsylvania; has three living children, Maurice, May and Floyd. 5. Julia K., born September, 1855; married Rev. Isaac B. Wilson, has one daughter, Ruth. They reside at Spencer, New York.

III. Edwin C., son of Charles Moody, was born in Union, New York, November 4, 1838; He was educated at the public schools, and at an academy at Union, New York. He began the study of law in 1858, in the office of his uncle, John Moody, in the city of New York, and attended the New York University Law School, where he was graduated in April, 1861, and the degree of LLB was conferred upon him by the university, and he was admitted in the supreme court in New York, in May, 1861, as an attorney and counselor. It was in the midst of the civil war, and he opened a law office in the village of Union, New York, and commenced the practice of law at that place, in July, 1861. He was engaged in the enlisting of men for the service, and as deputy provost marshall in the enrollment of men preparatory to a draft. During the winters of 1861-62-63 he taught school at Union. He was town clerk of Union in 1865-66, and supervisor of the town of Union for eight years after 1866, chairman of the board of supervisors in the years 1870-74-75; in 1877, he was a member of assembly from Broome county. Removed from Union to Binghamton in 1877, and, from 1861 to the present time, engaged in practicing law in Broome county general business, and was county attorney from August 1907, to January, 1910. In politics he is a Republican. He is a member of the Calumet Lodge, Odd Fellows, and of the Binghamton Club.

He married (first), November 26, 1862, Helen D., born July 16, 1840, daughter of Stephen and Maria (Powers) Wheeler. She died in June, 1879 and he married (second), at Canastoga, New York, August 12, 1885, Sadie A., daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth Clow. Children of first wife: 1. Edith S., born October 1, 1866; married Rev. E. F. Hollenbeck; children: Wilbur C. and Margaret. 2. Carrie, born 1867, married Henry S. Waldron, and had Helen and Gladys Waldron. 4. Edwin H., born May 3, 1879, graduate of Hamilton College, afterwards from New York Law School, 1902; admitted as an attorney and counselor at law in supreme court, 1905; now in partnership with his father. Child of second wife: 5. Mildred E., born March 29, 1895.

5. NEHIMIAH5 MOODY (DAVID4, JOHN3, DAVID2, CLEMENT1) was born 21 July 1800 in New Hampshire, and died 01 July 1875 in Coryville, McKean County, Pennsylvania. He married NANCY ROCKWELL 30 September 1824 in Union, Broome County, New York, daughter of David Rockwell and Lois Culver.

Notes
Nehimiah and Nancy moved their large family from Union in Broome County, New York and settled them in McKean County, Pennsylvania in 1839. They left behind the life that they had made there as well as the graves of two young daughters to settle in the fertile mountain valleys of the Allegany Mountains.

Nehimiah expressed a wish to be buried on the knoll overlooking the farm of his son Elisha. Upon his death, he was buried as he had requested and around him grew a family cemetery. On June 10 1874 Elisha deeded the land setting aside the Moody Hollow Cemetery with burial spaces for each of his brothers and sisters and their decendents and setting some aside for the common cause. The land was deeded to his brother Gilbert as Trustee. The actual deeding of the land for each family member was done on 1 December 1891.

All of the children of Nehimiah and Nancy are laid to rest there with the exception of their two infant daughters buried in the Nanticoke Cemetery in Union Center, Broome County, New York, Son Oscar who was buried in Rebel Prison on Bell Island as a prisonor of the Confederacy in the Civil War, and Franklin who is buried with his wife Laura Kent in the Brookside Cemetery, in Oconto County, Wisconsin

Received from Judith Schick, professional Genealogist in Bradford, PA a copy of the 1907 Family Reunion Book entiled "A Complete List of the Family and Descendents of Nehimiah and Nancy Moody"

By occupation Nehemiah was a farmer and lumberman. He and his family were Methodist Episcopal by faith.

Jemima is age 44. Charles has a sister Jemima or Germina who would be 46 years of age in 1850. Josiah Cafferty is a butcher.

He married LAURA KENT 09 August 1852 in McKean County, Pennsylvania, daughter of Ruben Kent and Prudence Wood.

Notes
Frank served with the Pennsylvania Artillary in Company D, Regiment 4.

He married Laura Kent on August 9, 1852. The marriage was performed by John Edwards, Justice of the Peace.

Frank and Laura moved their family to Brookside, Oconto County in 1867 from Coryville or Moody's Hollow in McKean County Pennsylvania. The Coryville area is in the Allegany Mountains of Pennsylvania and has many "Hollows" or small valleys throughout. Moody's Hollow is one of these as well as Kent Hollow.

In August of 1898 Frank returned to Moody Hollow with his granddaughter, Laura. They returned to Brookside in early October of 1898.

"Another old resident of the town of Pensaukee was called to his long rest Monday morning, when Frank Moody, an old war veteran died at the home of his son, John D. Moody, in the town of Pensaukee, aged 83 years.
About 16 years ago he had a stroke of paralysis from which, however, he recoverd, but last February he suffered another stroke from which, and the feebleness incident to his advanced years, he finally passed away.
Deceased was born in Pennsylvania, 83 years ago and came to this county locating in Pensaukee on a farm 37 years.
He is survived by three sons, John D. Moody, with whom he lived, Reuben, who resides in Oconto Falls, but at the time of his death was in the state of Washington, and Frank of Wells, Michigan.
He was a member of Company D, 4th Penn. Art. during the Civil War and a member of D.D. Barker Post G.A.R. of Abrams.
The funeral was held at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon, from the Brookside M.E. Church, Rev. O.W. Smith of Hickory officiating with interment in Brookside Cemetery. D.D. Barker Post G.A.R., conducted the services at the grave and 12 members of E.A. Ramsey Post, of this city attended, 27 old soldiers being in line to pay their last respects to their departed comrade." NOTE: Frank Moody was actually born in Union, Broome County, New York and moved with his parents Nehimiah Moody and Nancy Rockwell Moody to Corryville, McKean County, Pennslyvania when he was nine years old.

"John D. Moody, 72, a pioneer farmer and highly respected resident of the town of Pensaukee, died Monday evening, October 17, at the home of his son, Joseph, at Brookside. He had been in failing health for about two years. Carcinoma of the stomach was given as the cause of his death.

Mr. Moody was born in Corryville, Pennsylvania, April 12, 1855. When but a young boy he made his way West, coming to Oconto county. He settled on a farm in the Town of Pensaukee, where he has resided for sixty years. Mr. Moody was very in the civic affairs of his community, and was treasurer of the Town of Pensaukee for eighteen years. He also served in the capacity of school treasurer in his district and for many years was an officer in the M. W. A. lodge. In late years he has been living in quiet retirement.

On October 8, 1877 he was married to Miss Abigail Classon of Oconto. Mrs. Moody died eighteen years ago. He is survived by four sons, W. F. (William F.) Moody, Chardon, Ohio; Gilbert D. Moody, Tshikapa, Belgian Congo, West Africa; J. W. (should be G. W., George W.) Moody, Weyauwega, Wis; Joseph Moody, Brookside; one daughter, Mrs. Earl (Beatrice L.) Knowles, Weyauwega, Wis., twenty grandchildren and one great grandchild.

The funeral sevices were held Thursday afternoon at two o'clock from the home of his son Joseph. Rev. O. W. Smith of Ocontomowoc, an old friend of Mr. Moody, officiated. Interment was made in the Brookside cemetery. The pallbearers were six members of the M.W.A. lodge, Goodrich DeLano, Wesley Dunton, Elmer Lear, James Bundy, Alvin Winans and Gilbert Scholtz.

John D. Moody was but 12 years of age when he accompanied his
parents from McKean county, Pennsylvania, to the town of Oconto. That was 31
years ago. An Aunt - Mrs. Schuyler Tuttle - resided where John Caldwell now
lives, the first house east of Cook Bros., famr. Another aunt, Mary Jane Kent,
accompanied them, who afterward married Thomas Simpson of that town.
John’s parents made their home in that vicinity about four years, his father
being employed in Comstock’s sawmill. Removing to Brookside they settled
upon 80 acres of land purchased of Mrs. Annie Avery, paying therefor $700.
The farm is 1 3/4 miles south of the village. There John lived until he married
Miss Abbie Classon in the town of Oconto, soon afterward buying 40 acres of
land of Edward Bell in the town of Pensaukee where they remained six years.
He then sold out and went back to the old homestead to care for his parents in
their declining years, and were they have since resided. His mother died two
years ago.
He has been side supervisor two or three years, and director and
treasurer of School Dist. No. 6 eight or nine years. He is a staunch republican,
“as was his father before him,” and been a subscriber to The Reporter for twenty
years.

Frank Moody Old Resident Pensaukee Dies
This afternoon at 1:45 o'clock from the home and 2 o'clock from the German Lutheran church of Brookside the Rev. Paul Eggert will conduct funeral services for Frank T. Moody, 61 years, nine months and nine days, who died very suddenly at 2:30 'clock Monday morning at his home at Brookside. A heart attack caused his demise. Burial will take place in the Brookside Cemetery.

Frank Moody was born in the town of Pensaukee in the vicinity of Brookside on Feb. 14, 1873. He was the senior partner of the firm Moody and Son General Merchandise store at Brookside.

The many friends of Oconto county were greatly grieved to hear of his passing. He was a man liked by all who knew him because of his friendly and jovial personality.

Surviving are his widow Dorothy, one son Delbert, and two daughters, Ruby and Myrtle, at home.

In August of 1898 Laura Moody accompanied her grandfather, Frank back to Coryville, in McKean County, Pennsylvania on a visit to his family. The Moody family lived in the mountains above Coryville in what is known as Moody Hollow. In early October Laura and Grandpa Frank returned to Brookside.

Mrs. L. S. Whitcomb, Formerly of Abrams, Died at Antigo Friday
Mrs. L. S. Whitcomb, formerly Miss Lolly Moody, daughter of J. D. Moody of Brookside, passed away at the Antigo Hospital Friday, after a two weeks illness with blood poisoning, to remedy which she had been operated upon a couple of weeks previous to her death.
Lolly Moody was born in Brookside in 1883 and in 1890 was married to L. S. Whitcomb. She had always made her home in or about Abrams until this spring when she move to Vilas county.
Deceased is survived by her husband, L. S. Whitcomb, five sons, Russell, Crosby, Robert, Harry, and John and one daughter, Beatrice, all of Abrams; one sister, Mrs. Earl Knowles, of Butte, Montana, and four brothers, William Moody of Kimberly, Gilbert of South Africa, George of Weyawega and Dode of Brookside.
The funeral was held Monday morning at Abrams, the priest of Stiles officiating with interment in Brookside cemetery.
Those from out of town who attended the funeral were, Mrs. W. J. Classon, Jr. of Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. Bent and Children of Cisco, A. V. Classon, Mrs. W. J. Classon, Sr., Mrs. F. W. Gardner and Art Whitcomb of
Oconto and E. W. Classon of Kewaunee.

NOTE: Laura Moody was actually born 16 June 1881 not 1883 and married Lester S. Whitcomb on 21 September 1899 not 1890. Son listed as Robert is actually Lester Jr. Submitted by Ron Renquin, great grandson.

Joseph (Dode) Moody, 72, Abrams, died Tuesday evening in the Oconto Falls hospital after an extended illness.
He was born October 26, 1898, and lived his entire life in Pensaukee. He married the former Doris Delano in Menominee, Mich. on October 14, 1919. He was a farmer, retiring in 1958, and was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge.
Surviving are his wife; one son William of Abrams; one daughter, Mrs. Frank (Germaine) Strigenz of Brookfield and 11 grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Gallagher funeral home in Oconto Thursday, where Odd Fellows services will be held at 8 o'clock that evening. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 2 p.m. Friday, the Rev. Arland Averill officiating. Burial will be in the Brookside Cemetery.

Russell "Red" moved to Milwaukee in 1926. In 1930 to 1940 he lived in Minocqua. In 1940 he and his familiy moved back to Milwaukee until he moved to Winneconne in 1980.

Russell was a freight solicitator for Motor Transport Company.

Funeral was held from St. Bernard Catholic Church in Milwaukee, Msgr. Berry officiating. He is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Milwaukee.

Crosby Whitcomb and Margaret McAllister were married by the priest in a Catholic Ceremony in the Rectory at St. Louis Catholic Church, Abrams. Beatrice Whitcomb, sister of the groom was maid of honor, and Leigh McAllister, brother of the bride was the best man. At the time of their marriage, Crosby was employed by the Oconto County Highway Department.

Crosby (Cobb) Whitcomb, 83, 2900 St. Anthony Dr., Green Bay, died Monday evening. He was born Feb. 20, 1904 in the Town of Abrams. He was a graduate of Oconto High School in 1922 where he was very active in sports. He served three years with the National Guard. On Oct. 11, 1930 he married Margaret MacAllister. She preceded him in death May 5, 1975.
Mr. Whitcomb worked for Oconto County for 44 years: 20 years for the highway department, 12 years as a County traffic officer and 12 years as Clerk of Courts. He retired in 1971. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, a charter member of the Knights of Columbus, and a charter member of the Modern Woodmen of America.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Earl Renquin, Sr., Green Bay, and Laura and Charles Violette, Milwaukee; and one son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Carolyn Whitcomb, Green Bay; one brother, John Whitcomb, Green Bay; one sister, Mrs. Beatrice Pecor, Springfield, Ore.; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren. Mr. Whitcomb was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Sally Danecki; two brothers, Russel and Lester Jr.
Friends may call at the Gallagher-Pinkart Funeral Home, Oconto, from 4 - 9 p.m. Wednesday. Prayer service 7:30 p.m. Knights of Columbus Rosary 8 p.m. Funeral 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Vianney Sipulski officiating. Burial in Brookside Cemetery.

Patricia "Patsy" A. Renquin died on June 1, 2000. Born on September 9, 1933 in Little Suamico, she is the daughter of the late Crosby G. and Margaret A. (McAllister) Whitcomb. She married Earl J. Renquin, Sr. on May 24, 1952 at St. Louis Church in Abrams; he preceded her to eternal life on June 22, 1994. For many years Patsy worked as a nursing assistant at St. Vincent Hospital. She volunteered many hours of her time with the Northeast Neighborhood Association and the Girl Scouts of America. Patsy loved craftwork, reading, and spending time with her family and friends. She loved being involved in any activity that involved her grandchildren including concerts, baseball games, pageants, church programs, football games, track meets, homecomings, cheerleading and church functions.

She is survived by her seven children and spouses: Buck and Val Renquin of Sobieski, Ron and Meg Renquin of Green Bay, Kathy Schenk of Green Bay, Ginny and Alan Orr of Oconto, Peg and Dale Clark of Green Bay, Steven Renquin of De Pere, Laurie and John Keating of Green Bay.

Further survived by 23 grandchildren; one sister and brother-in-law, Laura and Charles Violette; one brother and sister-in-law, Patrick and Carolyn Whitcomb; many nieces and nephews; her best friend, Audrey Nail; other special family members: Paul Dorn, Gordy Schenk and Connie Renquin.

Preceded in death by her parents; husband, Earl; one sister, Sally Danecki.

Friends called at Malcore Funeral Home, University Avenue at Baird Street, Green Bay. Parish wake service was held. Mass of Christian Burial was conducted Monday 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church (corner of St. John and Madison), Green Bay. Monsignor Roy Klister officiated and Deacon Pat Whitcomb assisted. Burial in Brookside Cemetery.

All her life, Mom gave freely to others. In death she gave the last gifts possible, through tissue and marrow donation.

Sally Danecki, 50, of Milwaukee, passed away Tuesday at their home. She was born July 8, 1936, at Little Suamico.

Living, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Requin, 1251 Day St. entered active duty in the United States Air Force Oct. 24.
After completeing basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, TX, Requin bill begin training in the Administrative Specialist career area.
Press Gazette was consistant in keeping the spelling of Renquin incorrect.
