25 Orphan Trains Sent to Wisconsin

From the Files of the Children's Aid Society of New York

1. Delavan and Sharon, (Walworth County), WI, and Racine (Racine County), WI Company left New York on July 25, 1856
2. Grant County, WI One child was sent from New York in January 1857
3. Janesville, Rock County, WI A mother and daughter were sent on from a distribution in Ohio, which left on March 30, 1858
4. Ashby and Summit, WI A group of five children, ages six, eight, ten, sixteen, and twenty, were sent in June 1859
5. Ripon, (Fond du Lac County),WI Left Sep 11, 1862 from New York. One fifteen year-old sent from Medina Co., Ohio to Ripon, WI
6. Oshkosh (Winnebago County), Berlin and Markesan (Green Lake County), Rushford (Winnebago County) CAS agent O'Connin (or O'Connor) accompanied a group of forty children on September 12, 1865. The group consisted of a lot of teenagers.
7. LaCrosse, (LaCrosse County), WI CAS agent E. Trott accompanied a group of thirty plus children on June 19, 1866
8. Portage, Arlington, and Lodi (Columbia County), Briggsville (Marquette County), and West Point (Columbia County), WI CAS agent O'Connin accompanied a very large group on September 11, 1866. The main stop was in Portage. The children's names filled three quarters of a page in the CAS record book.
9. Sparta and Leon (Monroe County), Farmer's Valley ( ? County), West Salem and Bangor (LaCrosse County), Bad Axe, Burns, ( ? County), WI CAS agent E. Trott accompanied a very large group on December 14, 1867, bound for Sparta, WI. A few were placed in other states en-route.
10. Summit, Concord and Alderney (Dodge or Jefferson County?), Mapleton (Dodge County), Monterey and Oconomowoc (Jefferson County), WI CAS agent E. Trott accompanied a group of fifteen children on January 26, 1869, bound for Summit, WI.
11. Fort Atkinson, Jefferson County, WI CAS agent E. Trott accompanied a group of children on April 20, 1869. Six were placed in Chicago, IL, en-route.
12. Fort Howard, Brown Co., WI CAS agent E. Trott accompanied a group of eight to ten children on July 27, 1869.
13. Stoughton, (Dane County), Fulton and Edgerton (Rock County), WI CAS agent Charles Fry accompanied a group, which consisted of mainly families, on August 10, 1869. The official destination was Stoughton, WI. The group consisted of one 76 year-old. Five teenagers went to Fulton, and one 15 year-old went to Edgerton.
14. Fox Lake, (Dodge County),WI CAS agent E. Trott accompanied a group of twenty children on September 7, 1869. Some were placed in other states en-route. There were some families in the group.
15. New Lisbon and Armenia (Juneau County), WI CAS agent E. Trott accompanied a group of children bound for New Lisbon on November 2, 1869. Most were placed in New Lisbon, but about half were placed elsewhere.
16. Watertown, Jefferson County, WI A mother and father, along with five or six of their children, were placed in 1869.
17. destinations not given CAS reports that they sent 163 children to WI between February 1st and October 1st, 1869, and an additional 106 children between November 1869, and October 1870.
18. Boscobel, Fennimore, Lancaster, Woodman, and Blue River (Grant County), and Byrds Corners (Richland County), WI CAS agent E. Trott accompanied a large group bound for Boscobel on June 14, 1870.
19. Spring Green (Sauk County), Black Earth, and Mazomanie, (Dane County), WI On July 11, 1870, CAS agent Charles Fry accompanied a group of children "to the west." The official destination was Spring Green. Most were placed in Spring Green and Mazomanie, with three being placed in Black Earth.
20. Elkhorn (Walworth County), Beloit (Rock County), and Burlington (Racine County), WI CAS agent E. Trott accompanied a group of twenty children bound for Elkhorn, WI on March 5, 1872. Several were placed outside of WI. Most were placed in Elkhorn, with the balance in Beloit, and Burlington.
21. Dane and Grant County, WI CAS agent E. Trott accompanied a group of children to Portage City on January 7, 1873.
22. Mauston, Lyndon (or Lisbon?), Orange ( ? County), and Kildare (Juneau County), WI CAS agent Charles Fry accompanied a group of twelve children on January 9, 1873.
23. Kilbourn City (now Wisconsin Dells in Sauk County?), Mauston (Juneau County), and Orange (Columbia County or Juneau County?), WI CAS agent E. Trott accompanied ten or eleven children bound for Kilbourn City on February 2, 1873.
24. Black River Falls and Melrose, (Jackson County), WI Between twelve and fifteen children left New York on February 18, 1873. Twelve were placed in Black Earth, and one in Melrose.
25. Augusta, (Eau Claire County), WI CAS agent E. Trott accompanied a group of thirteen children about early November 1875.
