CURTIS, Harris George

Harris George Curtis was one of Shiocten's early settlers arriving in 1854. His father arrived shortly after that. H.G. Curtis was a published poet and the University Library in Appleton has two volumes of his book. He was postmaster and brought the first horses into the area. In the book "Shadow of the Wolf" he wrote a eloquent piece about the early settler women that was quite forward thinking.... He wrote a section about Shiocten/Bovina in the old book "History of Outagamie County" He passed away in 1914 in Appleton. Scan of his obit.


ELLIOT, Charles D.

CHARLES D. ELLIOTT, CO. 'E', 6TH WISCONSIN INFANTRY. SIGNED on Reverse, in Ink: "C.D. ELLIOTT, Appleton, Wisconsin". Showing Elliott in waist-up view in early Wisconsin uniform. Elliott enlisted on 6/28/1861 as a Private. On 6/28/61 he mustered into 'E' Company, Wisconsin 6th Infantry. He was transferred out on 7/1/1863, and entered into the Veteran Reserve Corps. The 6th WISCONSIN was organized at Madison, Wis. July 16th, 1861, to serve 3 years. Some of the battles of this hard-fought regiment of the Iron Brigade were: Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, GETTYSBURG, Spottsylvania, Petersburg and others.

Probably of Stephensville or Hortonville or Shiocton.

This family photo was found at a yard sale in Madison. The family is not identified but the photo was taken in 1930 at The Ross Studio in Appleton.
