LOCAL MATTERS
To-day is the glorious Fourth.
City baker E. JOHN has purchased a handsome new wagon.
Every fireman should be at the engine house in full uniform at 10 o'clock this A.M.
Let no one fail to attend.
Boys should be careful in using firearms to-day as some serious accidents may happen
if they are careless.
The vacation in our public school commenced last Monday. School will not be opened
before the first Monday in September.
Jacob DIETRICH, of this city, who resided for some years at Bismarck, Dakota, received
his carriage horse from the latter place last Monday. It is an excellent horse and
of good stock.
DIED -- in this city on Friday last, Mrs. ERDMANN, after a short illness. Aged 59
years. The funeral took place last Sunday afternoon. Rev. E.G. STRASSBURGER officiating.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A number of tramps arrived in the city last Saturday. They camped near the depot
until Monday when they left for the South. Probably the board they receive at the
city marshall's hotel does not quite suit them.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Those young hoodlums that go home after midnight had better be a little careful and
let their fingers from the property belonging to the city. A few nights ago a street
lamp was lighted when it was a bright moonlight night and shortly after an iron railing
was pulled out of the bridge near the Hilgen Manuf'g Comp. and thrown into the river.
Be careful boys or it will be a costly joke.

DEATH OF NICOLAS KEMP, OF PORT WASHINGTON -- As if the thriving little city of Port
Washington had not had her share of trouble, the death of one of her most prominent
citizens and business men in the person of Nicolas KEMP, is another addition of inflicting
a loss to the whole community. Mr. KEMP died of heart disease at La Mars, Iowa Wednesday
night of last week.
Mr. KEMP had been feeling unwell for more than three months, and recently left on
a trip through the west in the hope of bettering his health. His sudden demise is
also a terrible blow to his family.
He was a business associate of Wm. H. RAMSEY, and together they were principal owners
of the large malting houses.
The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon last and was largely attended by relations
and friends of the deceased from the city and abroad. Several gentlemen came from
Milwaukee and among them we noticed Messrs. Chas. von BAUMBACH, GERHARDY, Von KALTENBORN
and others. To the bereaved family we extend our most heartfelt sympathy.
