Portage County was a part of Crawford and Brown County, Territory of Michigan in 1830.
1840 Census Boundaries
Present day Portage County was a part of Crawford and Brown County, Wisconsin in 1840. The area known as Columbia County was named Portage County at that time.
1850 Census Boundaries
Portage County included the area of Wood County in the 1850 census.
The eastern townships (Range 10), were attached to Brown County until 1851 when they became a part of Portage County. This includes townships known today as Alban, New Hope, Amherst, Lanark and Belmont in Portage County.
