"Camp Sumpter, Andersonville, Georgia
July the 12, 1864
Dear companion. I once more take this pen in my hand to inform you that I
am still alive and that I have my health tolerable. It is very warm down
here. There is 26 of our boys out of our Richmont in this prison and I want
you to tell Levy (?) that Darwin L Thompson died past Saturday. That is his
brother in law. Dear companion, I wish that I could be at home and the
children, but if it is the will of the Lord, we will meet again I hope. -
This unjust war will come to a close so that our men can get home to their
family. No more at present.
My best respects to you all remain.
Yours till death. Hubert Mathews
