- According to the 1873 atlas and 1917 atlas for Rock County,
there were six rural schools in Center
- Township.
- The location and current status of these school buildings
is given below (using the modern road names).
- The numbers given to each school are mine and not district
numbers.
- I've been told that Brown
was the one located in Section 30 on County B, but I wonder if
it was actually
- the one located in Section 24 (which was owned by H. Brown
in 1873). If this is the case, then Bog
would be the one in Section 30, near the Bass River, which is
more of a "boggy" area. I believe the school in Section
32 wasn't a "rural school" for it was located on the
edge of the village of Footville.
- For information on Barrett,
try Wendy Uncapher & Linda Herrick's 1994 book, "Barrett
- School, Center
Township, Rock County, Wisconsin" which covers school
records (attendance, visitors, teachers, etc.) for the school
from 1866 to 1885. It is available for purchase at Origins
genealogy book store in Janesville.
