- The Joint District for Milton and Fulton
Townships was created July 17, 1862, and the following
- supervisors signed the order:
- T. WALKER, Milton Township
- George W. OGDEN, Milton Township
- J. S. HOPKINS, Fulton Township
- S. BRACE, Fulton Township
- G. D. SHERMAN, Fulton Township

- The first meeting for the school was
July 24, 1862. The following men were elected:
- David McCULLOUGH, director
- S. C. CARR, treasurer
- S. T. ROGERS, clerk

- Also during the July 24th meeting,
the district purchased a one-acre parcel of land from S. T.
- ROGERS for
$25.00 and $300.00 was to be raised by taxpayers for the erection
of a 24 foot by 30 foot frame school house. The neighborhood
residents supplied the labor for the building of the school house
at a rate of $1.00 per day. Originally designated Joint District No. 6,
it soon became known as Merrifield
School. Miranda SAUNDERS
was the first teacher.
