The Joint District for Milton and Fulton Townships was created July 17, 1862, and the following
supervisors signed the order:
  • T. WALKER, Milton Township
  • George W. OGDEN, Milton Township
  • J. S. HOPKINS, Fulton Township
  • S.  BRACE, Fulton Township
  • G. D. SHERMAN, Fulton Township

The first meeting for the school was July 24, 1862. The following men were elected:
  • David McCULLOUGH, director
  • S. C. CARR, treasurer
  • S. T. ROGERS, clerk

Also during the July 24th meeting, the district purchased a one-acre parcel of land from S. T.
ROGERS for $25.00 and $300.00 was to be raised by taxpayers for the erection of a 24 foot by 30 foot frame school house. The neighborhood residents supplied the labor for the building of the school house at a rate of $1.00 per day. Originally designated Joint District No. 6, it soon became known as Merrifield School. Miranda SAUNDERS was the first teacher.
