Ruben L. Buchholz

Ruben Louis Alfred Buchholz, age 91 of Bonduel, passed away Thursday, December 27, 2012 at a local nursing home. Born on October 16, 1921 in Bonduel, he was the son of the late William and Helen (Rabenhorst) Buchholz. On April 18, 1948 he was united in marriage to Elaine Folkman at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Angelica. After marriage, the couple farmed in the Town of Hartland and raised five children. In 1958 Ruben went to work for Kuehl Enterprise and did carpentry work along with running the farm. He later became co-owner of B&B Builders. In 1973 the couple sold the farm and built their own home on a portion of the back 40, which Ruben lived in the rest of his life. Ruben did carpentry work full time until retiring in 1983. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bonduel where he served on the finance committee, the school board, and was a church trustee. He also served on the Hartland Fire Department for 25 years and on the Hartland Town Board for 15 years. When not working, Ruben enjoyed playing cards with his neighbors and many friends, fishing and hunting, especially the many years of deer hunting up in Wabeno with 1962 being a great year with the group bagging 4 black bear and 2 bucks. Ruben was an avid sports fan, especially the Green Bay Packers. He attended Green Bay Packer home games for more than 38 years, including the famous "Ice Bowl" against the Dallas Cowboys. His love of sports also included listening to the Milwaukee Brewers on his transmitter radio, as well as playing softball and baseball in his younger years. He also enjoyed bowling and was inducted into the Shawano Bowling Hall of Fame in October of 2000. Ruben took great pleasure in traveling with his wife all over the United States as well as Denmark, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland and France. He also enjoyed transporting the Amish community and visiting with the Amish children.
Ruben is survived by: his beloved wife of 64 years, Elaine; his 5 children, Ronald (Linda) Buchholz, Rheda Serwe, Roxanne Monroe, Romaine (Michael) Strauss, Regan (Kathy) Buchholz; and 8 grandchildren, Zak, Cody, Adam, Alishea, Amber, Rachelle, Tyler, Chelsea; 2 great-grandchildren, Hunter, Kendall. He is further survived by: 4 brothers-in-law, Robert Buntrock, Dewey (Shirley) Folkman, William (Florence) Folkman, James (Kathy) Folkman; and 3 sisters-in-law, Doris Buchholz, Fern Buchholz, and Beverly Anderson.
Ruben was preceded in death by: his parents; 2 brothers, Raymond Buchholz, Hubert Buchholz; a sister, Lora Roundy; and a sister-in-law, Arly Buntrock.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Monday, December 31, 2012 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bonduel with the Rev. Timothy Shoup and the Rev. Mark Palmer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on Sunday from 4-8pm and on Monday from 10am until the time of the service. The Swedberg-Wendt Funeral Home in Bonduel is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Ruben always had a smile to leave a lasting impression on all those he came in contact with. In his own famous words, "I have only one day to live; that's today."
