Matt Wilkie Killed

Harry Hayter received a dispatch this morning from Port Huron, Mich., for transmission to Mrs. Wilkie’s daughter at Pelican Lake, stating that Matt. Wilkie was killed last night. The dispatch does not state whether he was murdered or the victim of an accident. Mr. Wilkie bought a farm at Port Huron about a year ago, and after his hotel burned here, last spring, he went there with his family to live. He was in Shawano not more then a month ago, and the news of his death is the all pervading topic today.

KILLED IN A RUNAWAY

The long delayed news of the manner of the killing of MATT. WILKIE, notice of whose death at Port Huron, Mich., last Wednesday, was published in these columns last week, arrived Tuesday in the shape of a letter to the local IOOF, of which Mr. Wilkie was a member, from the N.G., of the lodge at Port Huron.
The letter stated that Wilkie was killed in a runaway accident while driving home from Port Huron, where he had spent the day trading, in company with his aged mother. The team which he drove was a spirited pair of young horses, and when about 6 miles out they became unmanageable and ran away, Mr. Wilkie was thrown out and instantly killed, his head striking a stump, while his mother received injuries which rendered her unconscious for several days. Mr. Wilkie's remains were taken in charge by the local I.O.O.F and buried according to the ceremonies of the Order.
