Herman Zernicke died quite suddenly last Thursday, August 8th, at his home in the town of Richmond. This primary cause of death was colitis of the anterior of the neck, which brought on septicemia and strangulation. Mr. Zernicke was ill with this trouble for a few days. He leave a wife and several step-children, Mrs. Zernicke having been the widow of August Kiebesadel prior to her marriage to Mr. Zernicke, which was about two years ago. Besides these he leaves a mother, father and sister to mourn his loss. The funeral which was very largely attended, took place Saturday afternoon from the St. Jakobi Lutheran Church in this city, Rev. F.F. Selle officiating. Interment was in the Shawano cemetery. Mr. Zernicke’s age was 34 years, 2 months and 27 days.

Zernicke, Herman, known as one of the best young farmers in this county, seemed happy and in the best of health last Sunday as he attended the mission festival. Yet he suddenly passed away on Wednesday afternoon. The sad news spread with great speed throughout the city and township, bringing great sorrow to the many friends of the deceased.
Herman Zernicke was born on 10 June 1873 in Germany and came to America in his young years with his parents and settling on a farm in Dodge County, where he made his home. He purchased a farm in Town Richmond, about two miles from Shawano and was married about a year and a half to the widow of Gustav Klebesadel, who was killed by lightning about four years ago. The pain of becoming a widow two times in her very young years cannot be expressed. On Monday Herman Zernicke felt pain in his throat and called for a Doctor, who saw that a very serious change was taking place. It appears that a previous infection had caused a festering tumor building in his throat, and within a few hours was strangulating his air passage and literally suffocating him. The Doctor made an incision into the tumor, but without success.
The funeral was held at the home in Town Richmond on Saturday at two o’clock and then from St. Jakobi’s Church in Shawano at three o’clock. He leaves behind his wife, his aged parents, who are living on the farm, two step children and a half brother, Karl Wenzel, who is also from Town Richmond.
