Nelis R. Kampanga University Archives

The University Archives, located at the UWSP Library (see Map) houses three major collections of interest to Portage County genealogy researchers.  

The first is the Portage County Historical Society Collection.  You can also directly check the society's website for online information.

The second collection is Kitowski/Groshek Collection (click on the link for an explanation.)

The third collection is part of the Area Resource Center Collection.  Below is a listing of the holdings of that collection which contain the most significant genealogical material.  The list is alphabetical by Author/Creator but the Title is more descriptive.  When visiting or contacting the Archives, be sure to provide all the information in the citation. 

Using the Archives - Materials can not be checked out but must be used during regular hours of operation.  A microfilm and microfiche reader, photocopier, and scanner are available.  The cost of copies varies depending on the format.

Summary: Records relating to the financial stabilization of a Junction City, Wis. bank which became fiscally unstable in the early 1930's and, in accordance with Wisconsin statute, established a segregated trust enabling the bank to remain open and allowing its depositors to reclaim their money with interest. The segregated trust was liquidated around 1944. Includes meeting minutes of the Trustees of the Segregated Trust, a few minutes of Discount and Loan Committee meetings, and occasional correspondence.

The diaries are punctuated with caricatures and small drawings. Also included is a volume of Victorian verse written by Precourt's daughter-in-law, Lucy Shortell Precourt, about her children and marriage. The volume is prefaced with a brief family history, and was compiled and published in 1986 by Lucy's granddaughter, Kathleen (Precourt) Wheeler.
