This recipe is from my great grandmother's cookbook (handed down to her granddaughter, Phyllis Dorothy Wilson Purdy, who has handed it to me. My great grandmother is Jennie Mae Halstead Colby.
Boil 1 12 cup brown sugar & 1/8 teaspoons salt with 1/2 cup of wter until it spins a thread. Pour 1/3 of this mixture over stiffly beaten whites of 2 eggs beating while doing. Put remaining syrup over the fire until soft ball stage is reached. Add to former mixture. Beat until stiff to spread.
