Obituary, printed in the Hancock News (v1:37), Thursday June 6, 1895
Stillman Ordway died at the residence of his son Al Ordway, one mile east of
this place, on Tuesday May 28th, aged 85 years. The deceased was born at
Swanton, Vermont, September 24, 1810, where he resided until he became of
age, when he moved to Fort Covington, Franklin County, NY, where he married
Miss Mary Ellsworth in the year 1835. Five children, three sons and two
daughters were born to them at Fort Covington. After spending 21 years of
their married life in the Empire State, they came with their family and
settled here in 1856. They were among the earliest settlers of this place.
His loving wife and life-long helpmate preceded him to the grave, eight
years.
Mr. Ordway was a highly respected citizen, kind father and good neighbor.
There is considerable satisfaction in reviewing his life, as, barring the
affliction of blindness, which he suffered the last 23 years of his life, it
was devoid of serious trouble or illness, and he experienced the extreme
satisfaction of seeing his entire family of children grow to be useful men
and women and well respected citizens, all of whom settled in this immediate
vicinity and were near at hand in the hour of death. Death came quietly and
peacefully at the close of a long and useful life, and although it was at
the noon of Spingtime [sic], we cannot but say Otiswell, for he now lives
where the sun sheds a brighter day; where the clouds are skirted by more
brilliant colors, and where Natures carpet shows a richer green. Angels
have opened the eyes that saw none of the beauties of this world for upwards
of twenty years.
