COMMENTS:
A broke hustler is a job that has since been automated. It entails leaping into a big metal
box in the 'basement' of the mill and "marching" for hours to stomp down
the shavings from the finishing room that rained down on you from a hole
above your head. NOT a fun job and exhausting. The shavings were later
recycled into the beaters and re-made into new paper, and the process
repeated.
Being a machine oiler has not changed much. The person is required to oil
certain spots on the paper machines while they are running. VERY hot in
summer (120-130 during a heat wave is not unusual) and about 85-90 degrees
in the machine rooms in winter. Lots of opportunity to be injured with
paper moving along on the wire at high speeds (mainly cuts from the wire
"felt" where the wet paper is being pressed and dried, in grandpa's day the
wire may have still been a very heavy woolen or cotton 'felt'). The noise
of the paper machines make conversation below a shouting volume nearly
impossible. But--they are paid alot better than broke hustlers and it beats
stomping paper shavings all day--so it makes sense that he chose that job
when it was available.
