KUEHL/KÜHL BIOGRAPHY

Emil Otto Kuehl
(Mar 23, 1889 - Jul 07, 1967)

Paternal Grandfather of [Marcia Ann Kuehl]

Emil Otto Kuehl was born Mar 23, 1889 (possibly in Hamburg, Germany). He came to the United States of America in 1891, with Carl "Charlie" and Wilhelmina (nee KUHL?) REINKE, who were married 3 years after his birth. His siblings were William , Hugo, Alfred, HIlda, Frieda, and Gertrude REINKE.

It is thought that the family first lived in Milwaukee, WI, and moved around 1895. In 1900, they were living in Wausau, Marathon Co, WI. Shortly afterwards, they moved to Cloquette, Carlton Co, MN. His parents went to a Swedish Lutheran church in Wrenshall, MN and his name is recorded as Emil REINKE.

Emil married a neighbor girl, Olga SCHULTZ Nov 25, 1912, in Cloquette, Carlton Co, MN, signing his name as Emil Otto KUHL, later he used KUEHL.

Around 1921, Emil and his family moved to RR 2, Nekoosa, Saratoga Twnp, Wood Co, WI, where he lived until his death in Jul 07, 1967.

Emil and Olga had nine children, in order of birth: John, Goldie, Pearl, Byron "Sonny", Harvey, Howard "Joe, Raymond Claude, Joyce, and Donald Arthur. The first six were born in Cloquette Co, MN and the last three in Nekoosa, Wood Co, WI. (As of 2001, only three are surviving, Goldie, Raymond, and Joyce.)

Emil retired from his job at Nepco in 1957.

Emil is buried with his wife at Riverside Cemetery, Nekoosa, Saratoga Twnshp, Wood Co, WI Section 3, T21 N- R5E, Lot E2.

There is a shroud of mystery around Emil's birth, and his real parents. Some of his children remember hearing stories about their father, but are not sure what the real truth is. One story reports his uncle adopted him, another states his grandparents brought him to America. On all of Emil's records, parents are indicated as unknown.

In remembrance: Grandpa Gramma Kuehl lived in a small white house, near the end of the lane, across from a hazelnut grove (which my brothers pitched me headfirst into more than once). They had a nice garden on the side, next to the driveway with white painted stones lining it. The gladiolies and can-cans (cannons) were my favorites...

Some of my fondest memories were bullhead fishing in the cranbery marsh with grandpa and grandma and our canepoles with red & white bobbers, having to take the bullhead off the hook without getting stung (cut) by the fins, having to cut the line more than once when catching a TURTLE and ... Grandpa washing and scaling the stinky fish in a bucket in the back yard. Pumping the water outside and carrying it in the house... The RED kitchen... Picking up grandma's pincushion cactus by it's head (yowchie), Grandma's cooking (seconds - no thanks)... Thick German accents.

My brother Randy and I went back down to grandma grandpa Kuehl's house in 2000, and to the Cranberry Marsh... It is amazing how much the same things are, but how different they are at the same time. In 1990, [Northland] purchased the Cranberry Marsh. I am not sure if they allow fishing there anymore.
