BLOCK SWAP with Deb MAKs Block Patterns
Boy, wait until you see my choice!!! I found a pattern and adapted it, it was in an old log cabin book!!! HONEST, you
wouldn't believe it when you look at it!!! It is a flower. It is adapted ever so slightly (to make is easier), so it looks
like a log cabin flower... I would like the same block each month, but varing the colors of the flower so I get 3 red,
3 yellow, 3 orange, and 3 purple flowers... For the fabric, use flowery looking for the "petals" and leafy looking for
the "leaves" and soft sky looking for the sky and soft foilage for the foilage. I would prefer that each of the 12 blocks
have different fabrics, so NONE are repeated, and I can get 3 different colored reds and 3 different color yellows, 3
different colored oranges, and 3 different color purples... If you want to use the same sky and foilage in each, that
would be great! That way, you can use all your scraps up and each flower will be different, just like a garden is...
HA HA HA... When you look at the block below you will understand...
Here is the block pattern:
Here is an example of the "original" block (I made it easier) in a quilt:
Here are the four color waves (ha ha ha - great artist, and they are depicted as solids but I don't want any solid at all
- as solids are boring and there are way too many great alternatives like mottled or "fern fossil" or battiks or hand-dyed or...???)
Now, by looking at it, you guessed that Fabric A and B are petals, and Fabric C, D and E are leaves, and Fabric G is
foilage, and Fabric G is sky... that was easy... huh!!!
Now, for directions, each block is 3 inches finished, except for the two log cabin pieces which will be rectangles of
3 X 6 inches and 3 X 9 inches finished.
Fabrics A and B are always the same color, but A will be the medium and B the dark. (Either shades of red, yellow, orange,
or purple).
Fabrics C, D, and E are always greens in differing shades of mediums and darks, C is the medium-light, D is the medium-dark,
and E is always the darkest.
Fabric G is always a soft blue, and fabric f is always a soft green... Same color each block, but can vary block to block, or not,
you decide for me.
Easy method to make 3 inch triangles
Fabric A: Cut one strip 3 7/8 inch x 7 3/4 inch
Fabric G: Cut one strip 3 7/8 inch x 7 3/4 inch
Put Fabrics A and G RST (right side together) and cut 2 squares 3 7/8 inches. Mark as above diagram. Sew on either side
1/4 inch and cut on diaganol in the center. This makes your 4 3 1/2 inch half square triangles for the petal/sky.
Fabric C: Cut one strip 3 7/8 inch x 7 3/4 inch
Fabric D: Cut one strip 3 7/8 inch x 7 3/4 inch
Put Fabrics C and D RST (right side together) and cut 2 squares 3 7/8 inches. Mark as above diagram. Sew on either side
1/4 inch and cut on diaganol in the center. This makes your 4 3 1/2 inch half square triangles for the leaves.
Fabric G : cut one block 3 1/2 inches X 3 1/2 inches.
Fabric F : cut one block 3 1/2 inches X 3 1/2 inches.
Put Fabrics G and F RST (right side together). Mark as above diagram. Sew on either side
1/4 inch and cut on diaganol in the center. This makes your 2 3 1/2 inch half square triangles for the sky/foilage.
Fabric G : cut one block 3 1/2 inches X 3 1/2 inches. This is the sky.
Fabric E : cut one block 3 1/2 inches X 3 1/2 inches. This is the leaf.
Fabric F: Cut 1 strip 3 1/2 inches x 6 1/2 inches.
Fabric F: Cut 1 strip 3 1/2 inches x 9 1/2 inches.
OK, you got everything cut, right. My advice is to make all your half square triangles first. Then piece the block as
per the diagram below... Do the white section first. Sew each block in the top row together, then the middle row, then the
bottom. Sew all three rows together. You should have the white section block. Next, sew the yellow section together,
and add the yellow section to the bottom of the block. And then last, sew the green section together and sew the
green section to the side of the block. Press and measure. Walla, the block is ready for mailing.
Whew! This makes me tired just writing all the directions. Sure hope you can follow them as I am looking forward to
seeing my garden grow throughout the year... Don't sign the blocks, as I rather you make a label for the back of my
quilt with your name and city and year and whatever... Be creative!!! But most of all, HAVE FUN!
