Marilla SOWL SARDESON THREADGOLD BIOGRAPHY

The families of SOWL, THREADGOLD, and SARDESON were related through the marriages of Marilla SOWL THREADGOLD SARDESON.

Marilla SOWL is my 3rd great grandmother. Marilla was the daughter of Elijah SOWL and his wife Lucinda (nee SMITH).

** p 31 - Marilla SOWL was first married to Robert THREADGOLD, an early settler who became owner of the Owego Mill. Marilla and Robert THREADGOLD had at least two children, Thomas THREADGOLD and Ellen C THREADGOLD. Robert THREADGOLD is related only through marriage. To find out more, click on [Robert THREADGOLD]

** p 31 - Upon Robert THREADGOLD's death, the SOWLs helped Marilla at the mill until she remarried to James SARDESON, who was also from a family of millers and they continued to operate the mill at Owego. Marilla and James SARDESON had at least four children, Sarah J SARDESON, Albert SARDESON, Josephine Marilla SARDESON (my 2nd great grandmother), and Charles SARDESON. To find out more, click on [James SARDESON]

One should note that Marilla had at least six children, two with Robert THREADGOLD and four with James SARDESON.

* p16 - The obituary for Marilla (nee SOWL) THREADGOLD SARDESON of Mar 6, 1896, indicated that she was born in Ohio in 1829, came to Wiota in 1840 and married James THREADGOLD in 1942. This family remained in the area.

SARDESON notes: * pg 20: In 1865, James SARDESON, wife (Marilla), and son (Charles) arrived in Argyle to run the mill. Charles donated the land for the building of a Lutheran Church. Charles eventually married Carrie HOVLAND, daughter of Peter HOVLAND of Blanchardville. They build a spacious home at the corner of Milwaukee and Lafayette. Charles children were Glenn, Orville, Paul, Chester, and Mabelle.

THREADGOLD notes:

* p16 - The Owego Mill was begun by Zopher Williams, and eventually purchased by Robert THREADGOLD. Robert ran the mill from 1850 to 1854 when he passed away. James SARDESON, who came from a milling family with origins in England, came to operate the Owego mill after THREADGOLD's death, and in 1855 married his widow, Marilla SOWL THREADGOLD. He continued to manange the mill until 1865, when he moved his family to Argyle.

Marilla's parents were Elijah and Lucinda SOWL. Lucinda cam from a Revolutionary War family (John SMITH) in Massachusetts.

* p129 - The first settler in the Township of Argyle was Robert THREADGOLD (lst husband of Marilla SOWL) who arrived in 1839 before the Village of Argyle was organized. He became the owner of the Owego Mill. Older citizens said that the Village of Argyle would have been built where the Owebo Mill was, but Robert THREADGOLD would not allow a store to be built by his mill nor sell any land for a dam site.
