Wood County Reporter May 11, 1861 Wisconsin Pinery Rifles. At a meeting held at Plover, Portage Co, Wis. May 4th, 1861, for the purpose of organizing a Rifle Company, and tendering the service of said company to the Governor of this state, on motion J. O. Raymond was chosen chairman, and Thomas F. Bachhelder secretary. On motion the Company now about to organize do hereby adopt and are hereafter to be known as the “Wisconsin Pinery Rifles”. On Motion said Company proceeded to elect officers, and the following persons having received the highest number of votes cast were declared unanimous elected:
On motion it was resolved that the election of the part of officers who reside in Grand Rapids be subject to ratification by the members of the company residing at this place. On motion, the Company having tendered their services to the Governor of this state, adjourned till Wednesday, May 8th, 18611, at 2 o’clock P.M. James O. Raymond Ch’n +++++ Wood County Reported June 8, 1861 On Saturday evening last, Capt. T. B. Catlin, of the Beaver Dam Rifles, arrived in town and informed a few that he should like to obtain eighteen recruits for his company. Moore These men are among the choicest in Wood County---not only as regards to bravery and love of country, but as men, who can follow the style of Marion’s men - who can live if need be, on one meal and three fights a day, or more fight and less eat. We shall in time receive a good account of them. Wednesday morning was fixed upon the time for their departure. A 7 o’clock a vast assemblago were in front of the Wisconsin Hotel to listen to a farewell address from C. W. Webb. Many thanks to Joan M Benner for transcribing these pages.
