Pittsville Pottery was started by a Catholic priest named John Willitizer.
He started to pottery company in 1931 as a way to earn money for his
parish. The company was incorporated as the Wisconsin Ceramic Co. At that
time a plant with a kiln was built. This facility is now used as storage
for Gardner Trucking. (Gardner Trucking is located on Hwy 13, but I don't
know if this storage facility is also on Hwy 13).
Due to the Depression this firm failed in 1932. Father Willitizer paid stockholders out of his own pocket, and then started the business over again on his own. This venture also failed in 1936. In 1939 Father Willitizer gave James Wilkins and his son William a half interest in the pottery, which then operated until about 1943. It is estimated that there are a many as 50 different shapes of pottery from this company. It is most famous for its dripless pitcher. The dripless pitcher was patented in 1933 by Benjamin Wood of New York. It is not known how the Pittsville Co. came to hold Wood's patent. | |
