FTP - File Transfer Protocal sounds like greek??? Naw
FTP is what you will need to upload the files from your hard drive to the server that houses your files. First, you need to install an FTP program. There are some for free on the internet, but may not have all the features you might desire... One of the best on the market is offered at [WS_FTP Pro]. And no, I don't get a kick back (grin). Once you have selected and installed FTP, there should be an ICON on your Windows desktop. Click the ICON, it should take you to a split screen with a directory on both sides. One side is your computer, the other is the internet... At the bottom, it should have some buttons, like CONNECT CANCEL LOGWIND HELP OPTIONS ABOUT EXIT OK, Click on the CONNECT, and wait for a screen to pop up. It should say Sessions Property and look something like this example: Profile Name: AdamsCoWI USGenWeb Host Name: www.rootsweb.com Host Type: UNIX (standard) User ID: wiadams Password: will be assigned Account: Be sure to notice that there is an arrow to the left of the PROFILE NAME window. If you click on this arrow, and you had several accounts, you could scroll down to the correct on, and open. Since you are starting a new account, click the NEW button FIRST. It should come up blank. Looking at the example above, this is how you will figure it out for your site. Also, use the email that was sent to you with the password and account data. At rootsweb, most information is based on your URL, which in the example is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiadams/ PROFILE NAME: You can assign this any name, keep in mind, you might have more than one account so name them so you will not get confused... For example, if you intend to be a cc for AdamsCo WI at USGenWeb, ALHN, AGHP, and WLHN, then you would want to add the USGenWeb after the name of the county, so you know which account you are in. Makes sense? Host Name/Address: Look at your URL, the host name is the same as the main directory of the URL. In this example, http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiadams/ http://www.rootsweb.com/ is the main directory. How do you know? Everytime you see a single / it is indicating a subdirectory. So, looking at the example: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiadams/ you know that /~wiadams is your subdirectory. Once you open FTP, you can create as many directories or subdirectories as you desire. HOST TYPE: This will always be UNIX (standard) for our applications. See the arrow to the right of the box, scroll down and select UNIX (standard). If you are working in a UNIX system which requires you code from scratch and you really need to know UNIX, be sure to purchase the book UNIX for Dummies. It is better than my tutoring you (grin). USER ID: In rootsweb, after the ~ is the user id... If you are using a different host, they should send you an email telling you what your information is. USE THAT. PASSWORD: In rootsweb, you will assign a password. You may keep the same password, or you may change it. However, be sure to click the box SAVE password. Otherwise you have to find it, and type it in everytime. What a pain! It will only be saved on YOUR computer. That means, the connection will open automatically only on your computer. If you go to a different computer, then you would have to enter it again. ACCOUNT: In rootsweb, they don't assign an account, so this is left blank. In USGeWeb, they do assign an account, and it must be entered. You may cut and paste it in. Whew! You got it all typed in, right? So, now what? Click on APPLY first. Then click on OK. By clicking OK, you will connect to your URL. Remember, you may use this same window for each different account that you might have. OK, you are now ready to use your FTP. What you need more help? (grin)... Lucky you, go to [FTP - How to use it?] When in doubt, remember [email MAK ] and I will try to explain it better and update the site... to help the next newbee... which is where we all started, huh? |
