HELP ME I AM NEW
FTP what is it? How do I intall it?

. OK, Your FTP is installed? If not, then lucky you, go to
[FTP - How to install it?]

Assuming you have been able to click on CONNECT, selected your account and hit OK, you should have a split screen. On the left side is your computer. Using the arrows, find you directory where you saved your HTML files.

On the right side, is your server site. Based on the example used in How to install, You should see something like adams/public_html and that means you are in your main directory. If it is a new site, it will be completely empty. If not, then it will have files and directories in it. Treat them just like your computer.

To move around, use the up arrow to go up directories, click on a directory to open it.

To transfer files to the computer to the server, color in the files, and click the arrow pointing to the server. It will transfer. When completed, it will refresh automatically, unless you tell it not to.

To transfer files from the server to the computer, color in the files, and click te arrow pointing to the computer. It will transfer. When completed, it will refresh automatically, unless you tell it not to.

Helpful hints: Under Options, it has a button that says SAVE CURRENT DIRECTORIES AS CONNECTION DIRECTORIES. When you click on that, the directory in your computer and the directory in your server will come up automatically. This will save time, if you have a large amount of directories in either... and are editing a particular directory. Remember the FTP will time out if the server detects it hasn't been used in awhile. When it times out, click CANCEL CLOSE CONNECT. This will ensure the fastest connection.

Oh, after you upload changes to your files, be sure to hit the RELOAD on your browser, or you might only be seeing the cache version of your page, depending upon your browser and server.

Helpful hints: Be sure to make directories on your server the same as you would on your computer or disk. Name the directories and files the same, so you are sure to be loading the right file to the right directory. The biggest problem newbees have is they upload their files to the wrong directory!!! (OK, I still do it on occasion. Trust me, you will be cussing out the computer because you don't see your changes.) ALSO, don't think, well I will go back and do it later. Remember how hard it was to get all the links working on your page??? Think about changing each one when you change the directory... NOT a pleasant thought is it.

Make sure that each directory has an index.html file, or they will see your directory, which some people think is evil, especially since it makes downloading (calling stealing your files) easier. Be sure to name the index.html file a different name as a backup, as if you accidently download the wrong index file to the wrong directory, you will be out of luck.

Also, be sure to click on HELP, if you get stuck, it has a great window...

OK, you are ready to transfer files. Be sure to BACK UP your server files and your computer files. I have mine on a ZIP drive disks in case of emergency failures... It really blows when you send the old file and erase the new one. Been there done that too many times.

In your FTP directory, go in and copy the file: WS_FTP.ini and save as WS_FTP.bak so you have the file in case you goof up when opening FTP. If you erase your account by accident or overwrite it, you can change the WS_FTP.bak to WS_FTP.ini and be SAVED alot of headaches as well as heartache when it is O'dark thirty and you don't have the password. Trust me, even experienced people do it.

OK, you are now ready to transfer files. What you need more help? (grin)...
Lucky you, go to [FTP - How to edit with it?]

When in doubt, remember [email MAK ] and I will try to explain it better and update the site... to help the next newbee... which is where we all started, huh?
