OK, Your FTP is installed and you are ready to learn how to use FTP? If not, then lucky you, go to [FTP - How to install it?] or [FTP - How to use it?] FTP can also be used for editing. Open the FTP, again, you will see two screens. Keep in mind the one on the left are the files in your hard drive or disk and the one on the right is the server. Let's talk about how to use the left directory. If you click once on a file and then click on view, you will see the source document written in HTML. You can edit this using all the normal commands available with your version of Windows or MacIntosh. When I want to duplicate a page, I open the file which is closest to the one I desire to edit, then use the SAVE AS function and change the file name. When you do this, be sure to make sure to change the directory, to where the file is located, or when you FTP, it will be the old file with no changes and your new file with changes will be on your hard drive, but who knows where (grin - think I ever did that? Or is the question which time?) After about 15 minutes of cussing out the machine, you will figure it out... Oh, and when saving files in this manner, be sure to select the type as Text document. OK, you have the file open, and you see all this source code, do you need to memorize it. NO NO NO, you just cut and paste into the page, and change the look. SO, it is important to make your SHELL page first, proof it, and make sure all the links work, then change out the top and bottom. Not to worry, this will be discussed at detail in [HTML What is it? What is a source document?] Before I forget, there are three boxes which you need to know before uploading any files. ASCII Binary and Auto. Here is the simple rule to remember, when uploading HTML files (that is files with html or htm extensions using FTP, be sure that the binary box is checked and that is normally the default. When uploading files with txt extensions, usually in the ftp archives for USGenWEb Projects, be sure to use ASCII. If you don't, when you download the program, all the formatting becomes lineary, that is, no line breaks. So, while the computer can read it, just what, you have a mess trying to edit when there are only two or three lines of text. If you don't believe me, try it with a sample file but stand by. Also, when using FrontPage or other webpage editors, it will add more coding than required, so if you do go into edit it, using FTP and but it back into the FrontPage programmer, it will also sometimes scramble the editing. Again, the computer will be able to read it, but you won't be happy if you have to go in and manually change the next time. When in doubt, remember [email MAK ] and I will try to explain it better and update the site... to help the next newbee... which is where we all started, huh? |
