OK, you did your background search for graphics and you are ready to make your pages. So many choices, where
is one to start? If not, then lucky you, go to [Graphics? Where do I find them? What should I use?] Now you have to write that HTML code, your head starts throbbing, you are looking at the book and it looks GREEK to you. Frustrated? Naw, Let me give you an example. Let's say you want to creat the symbol for Cresswell Graphics, ©Pamela R. Cresswell: ![]() Here is the exact wording for that graphic to appear with the link attached: [a href="http://cresswells.com/"] Now that I said it is exact, bare with me, this code must have a < > around it, instead of [ ], but if I do that, then you will see the picture instead of the code (grin). Stick with me now. The < > means this is the entire HTML code and ends the command. So, if see < > that is HTML code. To change it, you simply switch out the information between the " ". [a href="http://cresswells.com/"] is the URL where you want to link the graphic to. You should be able to recognize http://cresswells.com/ as this is the URL address displayed in your browser window when the Cresswell Graphics homepage is loaded. It can be readily cut and pasted into the HTML coding. is the location where the graphic is and how wide and high you want it. Again, you should recognize the http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiwood/graphics/ALHN/cg.gif as a URL address. Ready for an example? If you are the AdamsCoWI cc, your graphics are currently located at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiadams/ which is the main directory. I strongly encourage graphics to be in their own separate directory, so this is a bad example. Let me use an example that is in their own directory at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiwood/graphics/ . Later, you can refer to [FTP - How to use it?] and discover how to make a directory. I will give you an example. You decide to use the graphics at [Shawna Graphics]. The first thing you must decide is what graphic to use for the link. Go to: [Shawna Graphics] and scroll down the page. WOW, Shawna already has a button to use. You will need to download that graphic to your computer and upload to your graphics directory. To do that, right click on the mouse on top of the button that says GRAPHICS by Shawna. Now, you can either click on the View Image, and to see how big the button is and then click save as on your browser. Or, you may simply click on Save image as and save to your disk or hard drive. Once you save the graphic, note the file name. I will use bu-day.jpg for ease of reference. Upload that to your graphics directory at http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiwood/graphics/bu-day.jpg . Now, if you did it right, your graphic location should be http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiwood/graphics/bu-day.jpg . Be sure to check it out at [uploaded Shawna Graphics button] Now, you need to copy your sample HTML to your source document. [a href="http://cresswells.com/"] [/a] Now change the the URL from Cresswell to Shawna through simple substitution: [a href="http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Coffeehouse/5922/daylilly.html"] [/a] Note that I only substituted what was between the " " and nothing else changed. Now we will change the graphic out. [a href="http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Coffeehouse/5922/daylilly.html"] [/a] and it looks like this: ![]() Notice that it is scrunched up, that is because in the old example, the height and width was adjusted. If you want to keep the graphic exactly as it appears then take out the width and height commands like this: [a href="http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Coffeehouse/5922/daylilly.html"] [/a] and it looks like this: If you are using FrontPage or another webpage editor, the concept is the same, you will need to know the directory on your server for the graphics, and the URL you desire to connect. Are you still stuck? When in doubt, remember and I will try to explain it better and update the site... to help the next newbee... which is where we all started, huh? |
