Aims
The Association was formed in 1981 as a grouping of the Family History
Societies which then existed within Wales. Its aims are:
(i) to promote the study of family history and genealogy of Wales:
(ii) to co-ordinate and support the activities of the Family History Societies;
(iii) to promote and secure the publishing of material of particular interest and usefulness to
family historians researching Welsh ancestry;
(iv) to liaise with
- The
Chapels Heritage Society (Capel),
- The
National Library of Wales,
- the Welsh County Archivists' Group,
and other appropriate bodies, to represent the interests and needs of the Family History Societies
and their members.
As part of achieving the fourth aim, the Association is represented on the British Genealogical Record
Users Committee.
Co-operation
In addition, Association meetings act as a forum for the exchange of ideas between member societies,
and this can lead to the spread of best practices. It can also lead to the promotion of joint actions
in areas of common benefit, which may be beyond the resources of a single society.
An example of co-operation between the member societies was the joint hosting of
a British Family History Conference, held some years ago at Aberystwyth.
The first edition of the book "Welsh Family History - A Guide to Research" was jointly
produced through the Association, as was the more recent book "Researching Family History in
Wales".
All the Association's member societies are also members of the Federation of Family History Societies.
Research
The Association regrets that it does not have the resources to assist with research, but
we suggest instead that you visit the web-site of the society that covers the area in which you are
interested, or visit the Relative Links
web-site (in either case, see below for more information). For the most part, our member societies are
not able to do private research either, but often they have members who are willing to give a helping hand
to fellow members of their own society.
All the societies publish Journals, in which they list the names being researched by their individual
members, who are encouraged to use the journals as a means of expressing ideas, passing on useful pieces
of information, and perhaps asking for help with specific problems encountered in their research.
All the societies are also pursuing programmes of transcribing documents and recording inscriptions
and listing and indexing material to help members to carry out their research.

EMAILS TO THE SOCIETIES AND THEIR WEBMASTERS
For your convenience, the details below of each member Society includes the email address for
contact purposes (normally that of its Secretary) and for its Webmaster.
However, you must remember that all our Societies are administered and run by enthusiastic
amateurs in their spare time, often at the cost of neglecting their own researches. Society Secretaries
and Webmasters therefore do not have the time to deal with any email, other than that relating directly
to the tasks they carry out for their Society.
Regrettably, any emails they receive on other subjects, such as general enquiries about
personal researches from non-members of the Society, usually have to be ignored, since even the normal
courtesy of a reply takes up time that should be spent on other activities.
Instead, we suggest that you visit the web-site of the Society you are interested in, by
clicking on its name below. If you do not find your answer there, or via any links it may provide,
one of our webmaster's other sites Relative
Links provides direct links to a comprehensive selection of genealogy sites. One category is
"Research in Wales" and, if you go to that category on the "Shortcuts" page, you will
find links to such pages as Wales/Cymru [Cyndi's List] and Wales [GENUKI]. There is also a separate
category on "How to carry out research".
