1871 CENSUS INDEXES FOR
MONMOUTHSHIRE |
|
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
ORDER OF LISTING
In the indexes, people are listed in order of forenames within surnames and, where there is more than one person with the same name, they appear in descending order of age. Where a name isn't clear, and it hasn't been possible to clarify it from any other source, it's preceded by a question mark. If the handwriting of the surname is ambiguous, leading to alternative interpretations, then the entry has been indexed under each of them (again preceded by a question mark).
CENSUS PLACES
Persons are listed not within the parish in which the entry appears but within their Registration Sub-District, with the parish quoted preceding the Public Record Office reference (Piece number/ folio number/ page number). We believe that a single list is generally easier for you to refer to than separate lists for each parish, especially if you only know the district in which your ancestor(s) may have been living, or in which he or she was born (possibly from a certificate). Indexes for the larger Sub-Districts are split alphabetically by surname into more than one volume, as shown in the list below: please give all the details quoted when ordering, to avoid errors (eg "please send me vol.5 of the 1871 index, Newport Sub-District, G - I)".
If you know where your ancestor(s) may have been living, but don't know what Registration Sub-District it came under, our List of Parishes will show you. And, if the place isn't listed there, we've also compiled a List of other Places in Monmouthshire: this shows small villages, local districts or hamlets that were part of larger parishes, and also gives some alternative spellings, and English/Welsh equivalents.
NEWPORT SUB-DISTRICT: BIRTHPLACES
In the 1871 census, there are over 30,000 entries for the Sub-District of Newport alone (which comprised only the Borough and St Woollos parish). Because of this, there are likely to be far more entries for persons with the same name, and even similar ages. So we have not included the parish against the entries in those volumes. Instead, we felt it would be of more benefit to you if we showed the place of birth for the person concerned, to enable you to distinguish between such persons. Similarly, there are over 4,200 entries for Christchurch parish (covering what is now regarded as the Maindee and Christchurch districts of the town of Newport). So we have published these in a separate volume to the rest of Caerleon Sub-District in which it fell, to be able similarly to include the place of birth.
Remember, however, that the "Where Born" column shows what the enumerator was told, and isn't necessarily either accurate or correctly written down. We have noted the actual spelling used but, where this appears suspect or where we believe the wrong county may have been entered, we show possible alternatives in brackets since this may help you. A list of the Chapman County Codes and the ISO Standard Country Codes used appears at the end of those volumes, in case you're not familiar with them.
